| Someone dropped off a dog at our house... Or at least I think that's what happened. We let our three puppies outside for no more than five minutes and we went to go let them back in and there was a dog out with them. She ran up to the door with them and gets along with them apparently.
There's absolutely no holes or anything in our fence. The gate wasn't open. We do only have about a 5ft chain link fence that backs up to a walk way (going from our neighborhood to a school.) We think someone saw we are dog lovers and wanted to dump her off. She's fairly skinny and needs her nails done. She's friendly but really scared. When I reach down to pet her she flinches back like I'm going to hit her.
I don't know what to do with her. I walked around the neighborhood with her on a leash but I really don't want someone to say she's theirs just because she looks pit bull-y. Our humane society is closed today. Do they usually charge people to drop off strays? I know ours charges owner surrenders. I feel so bad for her. She's in a crate in our car right now but if I don't find out anything tonight I'll bring another crate into the house and put her inside. |

| WOW! Look at those muscles. She looks pretty. I don't know about the humane societies and whether they have a free stray dog drop off. I hope they do though or you can find a rescue that will take her.
Here's hoping she gets a good home with people, bones and warm beds! |

| Poor unwanted mama dog... I want to kick people in the teeth sometimes! Did you notice whether or not she has signs of whelping a recent litter? I'm concerned someone (obviously) used her to churn out a litter for profit and then dumped her. Any milk in her teats?

| She has large nipples as if she has had many litters. Could be a BYB dog that they decided they were done with and dropped her in your yard. Who knows... do you have a local craigslist? You could post an add with no pic or description of her. Just the area she was found. If she is truly lost, someone will be looking for her and should be able to supply you with a detailed description of her.
Good luck!

| Aww she looks like my boy. Are there any pitbull rescues in your area? I would not take a pit to the pound/spca unless I had no choice. 90% likely she will be pts. Being a black pitbull makes it even worse.

| I don't know if she's had any litters. Her nipples are big but her stomach area is really tight (maybe it's just because she's muscular?) She's also fairly young. She has marks on her face which make her look older but she acts younger, I think less than 3. I just posted on Craigslist without much info. It's more likely someone dropped her off but I'm also worried she escaped because of all the fireworks last night. She's being so good I don't know why someone wouldn't want her.
Our humane society doesn't put dogs to sleep. I think they had a 98% adoption rate or something last year but I'll still look for bully rescues in the area. If I knew for sure someone just dropped her off and we had more room I would just try to find a good home for her.
ETA: just looked and I guess the adoption rate was only 85% :/ 965 dogs were euthanized but 915 were "untreatable." Looking online for rescues in the area

ETA: just looked and I guess the adoption rate was only 85% :/ 965 dogs were euthanized but 915 were "untreatable." Looking online for rescues in the area | First, thank you for being kind to her. She's a really pretty little Pibble girl.
Don't discount the possibility she just climbed/jumped your fence to interact with your pups--pitties are very athletic (well, if they aren't the "hippo" type overdone pseudo-pits some wannabes are breeding) and she sure could have gotten in under her own power.
That said, I'd be creeped out, if I were you. Thank gawd that if someone was hanging around long enough to get her over your fence, they didn't also come in and snatch one or more of your dogs. <shivers>
As to your shelter rates, yeah, any animal that does not pass "temperament testing" (and that can be a pure joke, sometimes) does not have to go into official pts stats. (put to sleep)
So, really their euth rate is way, way higher than advertised.
Being a black Pibble, she wouldn't have much of a chance, sadly.
Getting a pit into rescue, I fear, will be about as difficult as my recent foray into attempting to get a Coonhound into rescue. There're just too daggone many of them, and their breed-specific rescues and even all-breed rescues are just slammed with them.
Sorry, I know I'm being quite the ray of sunshine, but all that is by way of saying, thank you, for whatever you try to do for her. I'd post a ton of found ads, but make them ID her in some way.
I agree she doesn't necessarily look like she's had a bunch of litters--maybe not even one--some bitches get enlarged teats just from cycling--and she sure does have a girlish figure, still.
So, maybe *hopefully* she is really young. Will help some with adoptability.
Wish I could help more, and if you think of anything I can do, just holler.

And they don't take strays, pets only with a fee.
I would put up lots of signs in your neighborhood, at local vets, pet stores, everywhere. Ask employees at petstores/vet/groomers/boarding if anyone could help watch her till you find the owner/get her in a rescue/find her a home.
Did you check for a microchip yet?

| Oh you are so lucky! A friend of mine had someone dump a pittie in their yard months ago(straight up tossed the dog over the fence) only it wasn't a friendly one and nearly killed one of their smaller dogs. Irresponsible pet owners should be shot on sight. Ugh! It is kind of you to take this one in and seek out a safe place for her to go. I hope it all works out! |

| I know her chances aren't good. I'm trying to find a friend or somewhere for her to go but no luck so far. I got one response for the Craigslist ad but their dog was a chihuahua. I was looking through pit rescues in the area and most say they don't accept owner surrenders or strays. I emailed one and haven't gotten a response yet.
She was terrified of the house at first, not sure if she wasn't a house dog before or if she's just overwhelmed. I wish we could keep her for longer because she's been easy to deal with so far. Our vet wasn't open today so we haven't checked for a chip.
Here's the shelters stats. They only had 1,600 adoptions in 2011. If the shelter in Oregon accepted stray dogs I would take her there because they adopt out a lot more dogs. https://www.southwesthumane.org/site...Statistics.pdf
I don't understand all of it but it doesn't look good to me. |

| Have you looked into some pitty forums as well? They may know of a rescue or be able to pull some strings to get her a foster home in the meantime at least. A post on a pitty forum is how I got my Skoll... there are quite a few rescue-oriented forums out there that should be able to have some suggestions

| Jazi has a good suggestion--just be prepared to sort out a LOT of chaff, to get to the wheat.
If you think our breed attracts some, er, less than ideal types, wait 'til you get to reading bully forum posts.
I'll send vibes she has a chip and actually has a reasonable owner and they are reunited safely.

| I so wish we could keep her. She's such a sweet girl, I don't know if she did just get loose but at some point she was someone's house pet and not just a dog that was locked in a crate or outside. She does super good in the crate and is well mannered.
Thanks for the pitbull forum suggestion. I joined one that seemed active and posted but haven't really gotten a response. I'll keep checking my email for replies to my Craigslist ad. Our shelter doesn't open until 10 so I'm hoping my mom will wait til she gets home from work before we take her. So that will give me a few extra hours. |

I'd make everyone who wanted pics of her work their butts off, networking her, but I'd temp foster her.
Ask the shelter if there are any foster openings associated with them, that could do an emergency temporary placement.
Thanks again, for trying to help her. Were you able to get her scanned for a chip?

| We haven't checked for a chip. My mom is the only one who can drive and she had to leave for work at 7 am. If we keep her another night we will take her in and get her scanned. My mom called the shelter and they haven't had any calls matching her description.
I took her for a walk around the neighborhood again and no one said anything to me about her. People looking for their lab, chihuahua, and Boston have responded to my Craigslist ad. I've looked on the surrounding Craigslists and didn't see anything there either. Thanks for being so helpful!
ETA: Looks like she's in season. So maybe she did escape? Thankfully our only male here is 3.5 months and doesn't care. But it means we have 3 in season at our house now. And a 4th who should be coming into season soon.

You can ask them to put up a notice on their board, too. It's more reliable if you can take a notice in and put it up yourself, but since you have no transportation, ask them to do it for you.
And, if I missed it, apologies, but check with area vets if you haven't already.
These are longshots, but it's worth covering your bases.

| So we just got back from the humane society and she has no chip. They checked with a few different scanners and all over her, but nothing. Someone called it while we there for a black and white staffy bull but theirs was wearing a purple harness and had white socks for markings.
We didn't leave her there. We filed a found report or whatever it's called. We are going to make signs to hang in vets offices and at the dog park, etc. And keep looking for her owner but at the same time listen for a new home for her. In 30 days she's considered ours. So in 30 days we will get her spayed if we haven't found her original owner.
And my mom named her Patty the pit :p
