| Getting a real story for this puppy mill case Dear DT Community,
Recently a story popped up in media sources around the K-W area about an Amish couple who is having their “kennel” license revoked and believe it is because of their religion that they are being targeted. Let me just say, that this “kennel” as you can imagine, is a puppy mill. The area that this couple is from is notorious for having Amish puppy mills everywhere.
The woman targeting this couple is from Kismutt small dog rescue, and she is trying to put an end to Amish puppy mills. She has been threatening legal action against the township if they don’t put an end to these Amish puppy mills – saying that the bylaw officers have been turning a “blind eye” to Amish run kennels, and not enforcing the laws that other kennels must abide by on these Amish run kennels. As you can imagine, the media is mostly targeting her as a fanatic who is trying to take away the livelihood of this “poor Amish couple”.
This whole thing disgusts me. I’ve been following up on this story with the Waterloo Regional Record. From day 1 nothing has been said about the realities of puppy mills, and in fact, it seems that the writer is biased and favours the couple and what they do. At least, this is how I’ve interpreted the articles.
Today I issued a challenge via my facebook status linked to The Record to report the full story – I asked them to go and talk to the humane soceities and rescues around the area, to find out what puppy mills are actually like, and not just assume “well the puppies look healthy and happy… it must be okay”. *I figure, if an article came out regarding the facts of puppy mills, then maybe a couple more people in our area could be educated on this topic.
I’m writing to you guys, not only to make you aware of what has been going on, but thought that maybe, if there was enough support shown on the Record’s facebook page for a “truth” article, they might actually consider doing an insider look at puppy mills. So if you want to go and cause a ruckus… feel free
The articles are listed below:
Day 1 – Amish kennel owner feels he?s being discriminated against | therecord
Day 2 – Animal rights activists clash with Amish kennel owners in Perth County | therecord
Day 3 – Amish couple fight to keep dogs after losing kennel licence | therecord
Today - Amish kennel owners open their doors | therecord
The newspaper facebook link, in case you’d like to write to them: https://www.facebook.com/waterlooregionrecord
I’m probably dreaming, but you just never know unless you try! |

| Ah, the 'I am being picked on because of my religeon' gag.
In the UK it is illegal to kill an animal for meat unless it has been stunned beforehand.
This is the law, it has everything to with animal welfare and nothing to do with religeous persecution when the law states Jews and Muslims must stun the animal before they slit its throat.
Yet some declare they are being persecuted and a great many 'lilly livered lets not upset this group or that group' folk in power pander to the few who do want to abide by the rules.
It sounds to me that this guy, caught not abiding by the rules, is using his religeon as his get out of jail card.
Hopefully the people in power will not fall for this gag as so many of our British politicians have in the past and judge this case on the facts, not fiction. |

The rules should apply to everyone, not just some people. I was disgusted because in the latest post, the reporters went into his puppy farm and came out saying "well they look happy and it looks clean". Well, my house looks clean too if I'm given notice that people are coming over.
Not to mention that they refer to it as an Amish run kennel - it's not, its a puppy mill. They have 30 dogs and sell the pups on kijiji. There is no way they're just "avid dog lovers" who have dogs where, oops, accidents happen.
If only people were just a little bit more interested in the welfare of these dogs and where their puppy came from, then how cheap they could get their new puppy... |

| That is the most disgusting and inhumane thing I have heard in a long time. |

Regardless of whether or not they knowingly sell these dogs under the premise of them being pets, to people of this group all animals are intended for service. They are of an old farm mindset where all things on a farm better be the source of income, and if they are not, they are eliminated. If you think that's bad, you should see the way some of them treat their "horsepower" for pulling their carts. Animals are items to be used and disposed of, and in the case of the dogs for the mills, it is even moreso impersonal due to the fact that these animals are solely part of an assembly line.

I read in another article that they are being charged with 9 counts of animal abuse under the Criminal Code of Canada - trial date has been set to Jan. 22. THANK GOODNESS (for them being tried not about the animal abuse).
I hope they take all the dogs away from them and then start turning towards the other ones in the area... Amish-run or not.
You know what also irks me though? The comments on the Record pages from readers who don't think the dogs should be taken away. I'd like to give them a piece of my mind But then again, if these puppy mills are sugar coated in the media - why would any one think that they are bad?
I hope more of this story comes out - the real side. |

| Why couldn't one of the local news people film the kennel in all its glory and then run that on the news. Have the film be taken when they (owners) don't have time to clean it up for viewing.
As to the comment about losing their income, why don't they get a job like the rest of the people? Or is that something against their religion. |
