| For everyone who thinks Dobermans are expensive. I am trying to help my grandmother find a nice Maltese puppy. She was thisclose to buying from a broker (gag), but I got her turned around and she is willing to wait a bit for her new baby.
I called a breeder on the American Maltese Association recommended list, and WOW! They do minimal health testing, since apparently the Maltese is a generally healthy breed, but female PET puppies are $2500-$3000. This is apparently because of small litter sizes and that females are more in demand. The males are considerably more reasonable (IMO) at around $1500.
That being said, the breeder seemed great, friendly, but not a salesman, so I guess we will see where this goes. If everything lines up, and she decides that she only wants a female, Grandma should be getting her puppy in early February or so.
Dobermans don’t seem quite as pricy anymore

| I choked a bit when you first told me the pet price! That pet price is what some pay for a show prospect in Dobes!
Do they clean the floors with all that hair? If it cleaned floors I'd pay that price for something with minimal health testing!
Glad you could get Grandma on the right track!

| Yikes! I know pugs and bulldogs here are some of the more expensive due to often needing cesarians and small litter sizes, I think from £2-3k for a well bred pup (equiv $3.5-4.5k) and a well bred dobe here costs about £800ish ($1200) |

| Holy balls that is a lot!
Did you just contact the one breeder, though?
When I was considering corgis I found 4 or 5 breeders within a reasonable drive that I liked and they all charged around $1500 except one whose pet puppies were in the $2000-25000 range. The higher priced breeder wasn't doing anything different (like more health testing or anything), they just charged more.

| Nope, I contacted several AND I joined a Maltese forum.
According to old posts, this breeder's prices haven't changed in at least 6 years.

| More and more I think prices are going up for any well bred dog. Used to be that you could get a top working Mal prospect for 600. Now they are just as expensive as Dobermans although they are a healthier breed. |

| Holy cow! I've seen well bred GSDs go for 900-1500 depending on breeder, working prospects, and parent titles. I always thought Dobes were quite pricey considering I've seen estimates for twice that for a pet male, but the Maltese takes the cake on that one.

| | Alpha | Dobiewankanobi, Maltese in show coat are kept in wraps, this is the same for Yorkies. The wraps need to be changed once every few days to a week. Only some coated breeds can be kept like this, depending on the coat type wraps can also damage the hair- Shih Tzus must have their hair left down, and brushed daily.
So, no, the dogs in wraps don't "sweep" the floor, and honestly if you have a Shih Tzu in show coat in your house, you'll need to keep your floors extremely clean- a dirty coat mats, and if you have to brush out mats constantly your dog won't have much hair at all! |

| There's a reason I chose a Dobe over any long haired breed... I barely keep up with keeping Jaina properly bathed, anyway
And if you think that's expensive... I was looking at getting a Macaw once. Hyacinths go for as much as $20 000, and they are beautiful birds.
Needless to say, I am never going to own a Hyacinth Macaw.

| Dobes seem to be a lot cheaper in countries other than Australia... you'd be hard pressed to find a pet puppy there from a quality breeder for less than $2200 AUD. |

And now you know why I'm sticking with the cheap snake morphs! Get the exact same personality and temperament but a different color, spend either $15 or $200 000. Yeeeah, I'll stick with the cheaper end, maybe go up to $300 but not farther than that. My monitor will already cost me 1k.
