| I currently have a 120 gallon freshwater. I love cichlids, oddballs, and semi aggressives. My pride and joy is my 6 yr old 13 inch Polypterus Endlicheri. Other tank mates are Severums, Silver Dollars, and a couple Gouramis.
Before I got married I had a 55 gallon, 2 29 gallons, 40 gallon Hex, a 10 gallon, and a 30 long. Lol my wedding gift was my 120 to consolidate tanks because they wouldn't all fit in our new house.
As far a substrates go I've had sand and gravel. Love the look of sand but if not set up right it can really chew up your filter. I love live plants the more the better!

| i have a very poorly managed 29 FW planted tank. mostly tetras, though they're all different varieties...3 khulii loaches...and my trumpet snails went insane and had about a billion babies. every time we lose power i get more and more frustrated with the tank, so i think i'm going to start from scratch with some of it.
and this thread reminds me i need to get more filter media. |

| Current tanks- 29 gal african cichlid tank with one fish. He's 8-10 years old now and will be the last fish in that tank. I'm going to sell it and upgrade soon, hopefully. I'd like to do an african tank right and get a 75 plus gallon, really go to town on it. 29 gallons is really not enough room to keep a lot of fish, and some of the african cichlid species I'd like to keep in the future need more room than that.
3 gallon planted. Still getting plants established, so it's fishless right now. I'm planning on a betta or a few neon tetras. There's one snail in there right now.
1 gallon betta tank at work. I think that counts.
Used to have a 24 gallon nano saltwater with corals. It got to be too maintenance intensive, and a few power crashes convinced me to get out of the saltwater business for a while. I'd like to do it again someday. |

| I personally don't have a tank but my dad has a 50gl full of delightfully overbreeding african cichlids and 2 midget pleco's and a 20ish gallon (i think) with an oscar and our senior (oh gosh, he's at least 7+) probably foot long or so pleco
Small warning to you fresh fishy people....cichlids can be told apart (male v. female) for the love of all that's holy! get only one male if that.....THEY-JUST-WON'T-STOP! What we have now are such far hybrid color patterned fish from our starter 7 and despite their own overpopulation they still won't stop! I miss our regular, tetra, angelfish(they looked like them at least) and amazon tank...now that one I enjoyed!
I'm also personally not a live plant fan, we've always ended up with major snail issues, but then again none of this is up my alley besides walking past and going "oh look at the pretty fish" lol, it's the ole mans thing, just had to add us to the "we have fish!" list.

| Bean needs to get in on this thread. Been wondering how her tank is going now, anyway.
I'm so envious of you people who have access to good fish supplies and equipment, and plants and so forth.
Zorian, someday I may take you up on that plant offer. I ended up enjoying my "underwater gardens" at least as much, if not more so, than my actual fish.
I would never buy plants from any of the paltry few stores within driving distance here, though. Buncha sad-looking, infested crap.
I'm also glad to see there are folks here who keep their fish well, and for lots of years, and get attached to them.
I've had a few who "begged" for food, could be handfed, and recognized faces of friends v. strangers.
My oldest fish was a ten and a half year old Angelfish (FW).
Em has me beat, with her fourteen year old

| Cow fish are cool, I never took the plunge and did a marine tank, I was not home enough, maybe I will now.
I have a good tank for it, shallow, wide. I also have a mercury vapour light but I heard that Led lights are the way forward these day? |

| We have a 40g FW tank, just cichlids, and a big, ancient pleco. My son has autism, and fish are his favorite thing in the entire world, so it's "his" tank (tell the cichlids that, they see me and start "pacing" the front of the tank lol).
I would love to do a saltwater tank, but they're just so much work...maybe one day. |

| I have a very small 6 gal tank with two guppies, a beta, and three ghost shrimp. Because of its size and variety of fish, I keep a close eye on levels and so far everyone is very happy. This tank is 5 months old.
Here is my halfmoon sharing a chip with a shrimp

What do you mean by "shallow"?
How many gallons is it?
I'm so out of the loop now on saltwater equipment, as it's been at least ten years since I did marine tanks, and many advances have been made. No clue if LED lights can provide the appropriate spectrums of light or not.
Someone up-to-date can chime in on that.

| How funny that BOTH of my current obsessions are shared here!
I'm a fishkeeper also! I have mostly African Cichlids. Have been breeding Lake Victoria (endangered) species for several years now. Also have a 55g planted tank with tons of cool freshwater community fish (rummy nose, neons, koi angels, etc). I currently have 17 tanks running in my house with the largest being 180g...
*THIS* is why I jumped into the Doberman arena with 2 rescue dogs at once...
I think my life motto should be "go big or go home"... LOLOLOLOL!

| I've had fresh water and salt water tanks. I love both. Salt water is more complicated but worth the investment if you plan on keeping up on it. I travel a lot so no more large salt water tanks for me. I am looking at getting another 12 gallon nano tank with fish only, no corals.
My last nano crashed after losing power for 3 days during a blizzard a couple years ago. When I was emptying the tank, it cracked
Here are some pictures:

I think my life motto should be "go big or go home"... LOLOLOLOL! | Oh, I <3 Rummy noses!
You cannot find them at all, around here now. We used to have a couple great old-timey mom/pop type fish stores where folks really knew their stuff, and you could get them, then.
Now it's all big-box craptastic.
But the Rummies--talk about canaries in the caves, they are the best little water quality indicators, ever.
One glance at their brilliant color is so reassuring, and if it's faded at all, get busy changing water, hehehe.

I'm part of a "Fish Club" so I've got some great resources for good quality fish and can support the local breeders/ mom&pop stores and never have to really mess with the big box folks.

| Yeah, big box pet stores tend to be the worst when it comes to finding a variety of healthy fish. Staff knowledge varies from store to store, but our local told me I'd be perfectly fine mixing angelfish with my African cichlids. Really guys?
I miss our mom and pop fish store. My cichlid, Shaman, is in the neighborhood of 8-10 years old. I bought him 8 years ago and I have no idea how old he was when I first added him to the tank. Maybe a year or two, based on his size. They knew his species and helped me with some good cichlid keeping tidbits. His tankmate just passed away about three months ago at 6-7 years old. |

| We currently have a 10 gallon community tank (hoping to upgrade that to a 26 bow front in the new year). It has been up and running for almost 2 years now. The 26 will be updated to cichlids or angelfish (I like angelfish but he likes cichlids).
We're also setting up a 29 gallon now. I'm very excited for this saltwater tank. We're doing live rock with no coral at first, with a couple of clowns, maybe a mandarin goby, a shrimp, and no idea what else.
Several years ago, I had a tank setup with a breeding pair of rotkeil severums , but never had any luck hatching any of the eggs. I also had another 45g with a variety of cichlids at the same time. |

It takes a great, long-established, very healthy reef tank to support a Mandarin.
