Is your girl from show lines? There used to be a woman in our neighborhood who walked a show grey, it was mind blowing gorgeous and the build looked different than a race grey.

Pictures!

Greyhounds are breathtaking tho, for sure.

lol..I missed that thread! I love these videos though! What breathtaking dogs..my gosh..I would love one of them but I don't know when I would ever have the amount of yard space they need!

Mingues was the Greytest Very easy dog..fasted couch potato ever. His pit mix bro wasn't a rough and tumble dog so they both got along well and were both very chilled out dogs. The quietest dog sitting job I've ever had. They were so quiet and respectful. I loved taking them on walks.

I am not sure if she is from racing lines or not. She doesn't have any tattoos and I know she is not from any show lines that I have ever seen. She came from a farm that was dispersing their dogs when the owner got ill. She was out of a litter of 16 pups. They apparently used them strictly for hunting coyotes.

this is how she sleeps most of the time...lol!

Well she is a greyhound- LOL
Tho I know I'd surely be a regular to check out anyone's thread devoted to their sighthound.

I'm pretty sure I'd be a martingale addict too

They really are a fun breed. and then bond very tightly with their owners. Once they trust you nothing ever can separate a greys love from their human! I have not used a muzzle with my girl and other dogs but I can tell you she has a bit of a mouthing issue when she plays, like she will grab other dogs by their ears/necks and tug on them. I am not sure if this is a puppy thing (she just turned a year old) or if it's a instinct/prey drive thing. She is good with small dogs and cats (but she was raised around them and very socialized as a youngster) Squirrels...FORGETABOUTIT! She loves to chase a good squirrel. She has good recall when offleash but only when not chasing something. If she sees it and she wants to chase then she is gone and gone fast.

They are very smart dogs though, Mine just recently graduated from obedience school and she has just earned her CGC, we are now trying to get her TDI. Overall they really are a wonderful breed and so far I've had no issues with her and my doberman.

eta: most of the retired racers are not good with cats or small breed dogs/animals. They think they are bunnies and will chase and kill when they feel the need, but some are good with them and an adoption group will do testing for that on individual dogs. Good luck on your meet n greet!

Paul, have you considered a rescue dobe? Doesn't mean you couldn't get another one down the line....

The only retired greyhound that I met besides the ones that the rescue groups had out and about was at the daycare Kahlua went to when we lived in Florida. That was her favorite friend at the daycare actually. She usually loves to roughhouse but whenever she played with the Greyhound they did a lot more running than anything else. I watched them play and they greyhound was always out there with the larger group playing so I imagine there weren't any problems.

I don't think a retired racer will compliment your coming renovations
It takes time to train any dog and a dog needs time to adjust to a new environment.

Maybe you need to get a Doberman puppy earlier or consider an adult Doberman when your renovations are done?

I heard Greyhounds are real sweethearts at home but they are totally crazy outside... like my Asha. Hmmmm... maybe she has a Greyhound in her pedigree LOL

I will agree with you on the "crazy" part when outside. Not all the time but they get the zoomies often.

I will never, ever, again (not even if you paid me) raise another greyhound puppy. They are TONS of work and my girl was an absolute nut from the age of 11 weeks up until a month ago. She still is naughty and has her moments but she is a sweetie. When I do get another one it will be well past the puppy stages. But like any dog they need exercise but they can be lazy. They arn't called the 40mph couch potato for nothing,

When I was little, my family tried to adopt a retired racing GH. Her name was Brandy and she spent most of her time sleeping on the couch.

I think our big concern with her was how fragile her legs were... we have some rough winters with icy-covered snow here, and it was always in the back of our minds that she'd go out to potty one day, try to chase something, and snap a leg. We also did a lot of sailing, and we wanted to be able to take our dog with us, but we were always afraid she'd fall off and drown (we did have a jacket for her, but she couldn't get settled in it). Her random energy bursts and then sudden laziness, desire to chase the cats, and lack of socialization and training all helped make the decision not to keep her after only a couple of weeks trying her out.

Personally, I would have liked to have kept her longer and work with her on training, but I was too little and it wasn't my decision, it was theirs.

She was a sweet girl, though. Easy to walk, quiet, and pretty.

I thought about that but my wife wants a puppy so it could grow up with our small dogs. I'm assuming a Greyhound would be different but maybe not.

I'm still just in the thinking stage of this, just looking for advise from people who have Greyhounds. I wouldn't be getting any new dog until my reno's are done and the Dobe for sure won't be earlier than 2014.

I do think Greys are very compatable with dobes. However, they can be a challenge to get them to warm up to new situation like stairs, most greys have never seen a set of stairs in their life and it takes quite a while for them to understand and feel comfortable even using them. Patience is the key word with a retired racer....also, a puppy. I do not suggest a grey puppy for the beginner dog owner. I've raised quite a few pups and mine was a challenge. My doberman puppy is a piece of cake compared to her. But a retired racer may be good for you. They are a fun project to take on.

I had a retired racer, and at the same time a Border Collie and German Shepherd I never had any problems with them playing. She didn't really have thin skin etc.

They are a wonderful, sensitive breed. They are know where near as smart as a Doberman and obedience takes a little time for them to learn. However they are willing and not stubborn. They are clean, quiet, and are true couch potato's as someone else said.

They do tend to have dental problems. My girl had periodontal disease and had to have a full cleaning every year. In fact when she was eleven she had a cleaning and never fully recovered. One week later she had to be PTS. They are also very sensitive to many drugs.

Maybe I was lucky but I would allow her to run in open fields and parks, never near the road of course. But she never took off...ever.

Here is my retired racer Meg. I have had her for almost 2 years now. Her and Max get along great. In the house she is a couch potato and will not rough house with Max, which is good. But outside is another story. They can really get rough but Max has never hurt her. As a matter of fact, I have seen her lead him by his ear out in the backyard.

No, never let them offleash unless at an enclosed area.
I have never seen Meg sit down. She always stands or lays down.

My heart dog was a retired Grey I took from the kennel I worked at as a teenager. He was the best dog I have ever or will ever own. I got lucky young! Grey's are amazing Sadly lost him after only 3 years of ownership due to kennel help negligence at my local vet's office. I still miss him to this day a decade later.

Ive never owned a retired greyhound, but Rupert loves to play with one in the fields behind our house They run around like crazy, he's way faster than Rupert but Rupert has more stamina. I think they are gorgeous tempraments and I love how they are in the house. He is always offlead and gets along with small dogs great, though he is muzzled offlead just incase. His recall is great, though I dont think i'd personally trust a dog with those kind of drives offlead in an area that wasnt 100% secure.

We have a local greyhound rescue who teach dogs how to live in normal home environments and live with other pets. Some dogs come out of kennels having never seen another dog (which isnt a greyhound), never been in a house, never walked on grass ect ect. Some of them even get along with cats! It probably makes a big difference getting one from a good rescue organisation, unless you're prepared for the extra work.

Thanks for all of the pictures, advise and great stories.

I have decided against getting a GH due to the off leash issues. The off leash area I use is right beside a busy road so recall would be critical. If I could not be 100% sure of recall it wouldn't work for me and could be deadly for the dog.
I need a dog that I can have off leash because the last thing I want to do is walk down the street on a sidewalk. It looks like I'll just have to wait for my next Dobermann. I could 100% trust Dillon off leash and it drives me nuts that I don't have him anymore, he was truly awesome.

Thanks again. Hopefully this thread will be of help to someone else considering a Greyhound. They do seem like great dogs.

It's nice to see someone doing their homework, and researching...good for you!! Good luck with whatever breed you choose.
