| Its YOUR job to protect all of your pets, both the cats from being eaten and the dog from being euthanized. Do what you have to do to protect them ALL. its very simple. And if you can't, then yes, rehome then all.....

| I'm sorry but I do not have much sympathy for artificially promoted feral cats and the people who insist on feeding them.
Feral cats are a pox on indigenous wildlife. They are a whole other creature than a pet cat, altho loose pet cats can wreak havoc too.
This is the kind of thing that makes me ill, wondering what sort of homes animals really go to, otherwise good people who would even entertain putting a loyal pet down for something that is simply in its DNA...and one trying to clean up the neighborhood at that.
/not a feral cat fan or one who would turn their back on their dog over preventable "what ifs" |

| I think your indoor cats are safe...ALL outdoor cats are fair game...Dogs being the animals they are, see your indoor (and probably dog savvy kitties) as part of the household. I had a Rottie/Pit mix girl who was death on wheels for stray cats...but she and David groomed one another, and snuggled together...she never looked crossways at him (even if HE was outside). She never saw him as a "cat"....just another housemate. David would go out and hunt, and instead of bringing his prizes to me, he'd take them to Rubyanne...she appreciated his hunting skills more than I .
I have to agree with the majority of folks here, I'd never put a dog down for doing what comes naturally....it's unfair, and unnecessary. I'd sure be beating myself over it, tho.

| I don't have any cats currently, but this is the first time in my life that I haven't. I have always had indoor cats and I have never had a dog that wasn't completely peaceful with them. That being said almost every whippet I have ever owned would be thrilled to kill any cat that was unfortunate enough to be outside in my yard. Completely different circumstance.

| We used to have a rodent infestation at my old house after the neighboring property mowed their field and all the rodents came onto our property. Our dobe became a very proficient ratter.
If I had a feral cat problem and my dog took it upon himself to fix it, I would be happy honestly.
If you are so worried about your cats, don't leave them together unattended.

Sorry but this is not a rehoming issue.
It is in a dogs natural instincts to hunt cats, rats, mice, basically anything that moves. Now granted some dogs don't do it, but a great many do and if everyone thought about rehoming their dogs just because it killed a feral cat or the like then none of us would ever own a dog.
The fact that your dog does not harm your inside cats is brilliant, in my opinion they are part of his family and are not likely to be harmed in any way, other than perhaps he might lick them to within an inch of their lives.
But feral cats, tsk, tsk dear, to any dog they are absolutely fair game and to be honest if you were to come here to see my dogs and a feral cat came into my yard I know for a fact you would have a knipshen over what my 2 dogs would do to it. Always assuming they caught it. Boy can they run when being chased by a Dobe and determined rabbit, rat, mouse, goat and cat killing Terrier.

| I must make sure I read all the responses in future because I feel it necessary now to amend what I have written and posted.
Right here goes.
This is not a rehoming or euthanising issue, rather it is about keeping ones head and a close eye on Dog.
If your dog is left alone with your inside cats during the time you are at work, seperate them. I assume you have rooms in your house, that it isn't one open plan area. If it isn't then close off an area where your dog can happily be left and keep cats and him apart for the duration of time you are not with them.
You say he doesn't chase the feral cats whilst you are with him, only when you let him outside alone. Well in my opinion he is doing what he thinks he needs do to protect his space. When you are with him, he steps back and lets you do it. You are his human, you are in charge after all.
So my advice and you don't have to take it, but I think you should, is. Do not let him outside unattended. Heck there are numerous guys on this site who go out with their dogs when they go out to potty, so why can't you?
Will he kill one of your house cats. Who knows, I personally doubt it, however what I don't doubt from your postings that it is perfectly possible you will kill your dog for being what he is, a dog.
Dogs and cats can live with each other, your boy and your cats are proving this to be so. However, if you are worried, then adjust your living practices, start keeping cats and dog seperate and for heavens sake give your boy the chance of life not hang a death sentence over him just because he is killing feral cats.
Jesus in a handbasket, my boys kill Grouse when out and about, but they do not touch my chickens because my chickens are part of our family, (all hand raised from day old) and even if they did. I certainly won't rehome/kill them for it.
Oh and did I read right, that one of your cats is blind?
