| Sonic vs The Doberman So, my buddy is going out of town for a week (he took his 2 dogs) but I have his 4 hedgies... 1 male 3 females.
The one female is the friendliest, and so I thought I would introduce her to Jones...
BTW Sonic (I just named her, I don't think he's named any of them) well Sonic she won, lol.
What's that?
Ummm ma... It's pokey
Ma!!!! What's it's doing... must I stay? It's prickly
Hey where you going?
Nom nom nom Frito feet
Stay back you little prickly thing!
HAI DUR!!!!
Ummm Ms. Hedgie... I can promise you Jones won't try to kill you UNLESS you bite that...
Jonesy vs the Hedgie (First encounter)

| I was all prepared for a trip to Sonic and pictures of Jonesy eating hamburgers--but this was much better.
Do you think if a really determined dog would actually eat a hedgehog, or would the quills stop it? Jonesy showed nice self-control (and judgement).

| I love Jonesy! I'm pretty sure Elka wouldn't have stayed for that. Puppies kind of freak her out, a hedgehog? Either freakier than a puppy, or something to bat around with her paws. |

| people keep Hedgehogs??? Never occurred to me that people would domesticate them
I take it they are not native to the US??? See them all the time in the wild (at night) here! Those look quite small compared to our ones in UK, and they are dark brown. Are these some albinos or something? |

| As far as wild spiny things go, we have porcupines. Hedgehogs are pets. (I don't think they are domestic to North America or live here naturally. Certainly not in Canada.)

Are these some albinos or something? | I believe these are native to Africa, and are called Pygmy Hedgehogs. They come in various shades of grey, from what I've seen. I heard somewhere (can't remember where, though) that they are very prone to cancer.

My buddy has a GSD and a Golden so I think she is used to the dogs. Quote:

Do you think if a really determined dog would actually eat a hedgehog, or would the quills stop it? Jonesy showed nice self-control (and judgement). | I say it would depend on the dog... Most dogs I think would probably stop once they felt the quills in their mouth. They aren't as sharp as a porcupine, but when they are scared and in ball mode you are going to pick them up because they "huff?... sneeze?" so it kinda projects the quills into your hand lol Quote:

Are these some albinos or something? | Rosemary is correct theses are African Pygmy Hedgehogs, and the little girl in the picture is the smaller of the 4. the other 3 are probably twice her size I will see if I can get a picture of them all together

| Compairison.... I gave the hedgies a bath tonight...
This is the largest hedgie. You can kinda compare it to the other picture of the smallest girl above.
Also tried to get a picture of them all together for size comparison but it didn't turn out so well...
The largest one is the one facing the camera.
Smallest is the blonde really friendly girl
The one closest (sideways to camera) is the one eyed girl she is a little bigger then the smallest one...
I thought about putting the male with them, but then I was afraid I wouldn't be able to tell who was who when I put them back...

| Hedgehogs have been in the pet trade for many years actually. I saw my first one at a pet shop in jr. high. I got my first one back in '97 and have had them ever since! They are addicting. There are actually over 14 different species of hedgehogs, they are insectivores, NOT rodents & NOT related to porcupines, which are rodents. The african pygmy is actually a cross between the 4 toed hedgehog & the algerian hedgehog.
I think they are fairly easy to care for, they do not have an odor like many critters, other than their poop. Yes, they do need a flat surfaced exercise wheel, & yes they will most likely poop on it every night. I clean them each day, but that takes like 5 minutes or so to do. I feed them a high quality cat food mix & they like supplements of mealworms & crickets, they also like chicken & scrambled eggs.
They are prone to WHS (kinda like multiple sclerosis in humans). This is mostly genetic, so make sure you get from a good breeder. They are also prone to tumors, cancer & cardiomyopathy as well. They usually live between 3-4 years, but have been known to live 7-8 years & I had an albino who lived to be 6 1/2.
They are nocturnal. I like them because most are content just to sit in a fleece blankie in your lap all day whenever you are on the computer or watch tv, etc.
Right now I have 2 hedgies & a short-tailed opossum. I don't see my life without one of these critters!
Too bad the hedgies don't have names!
