Ever want to see puppies being born?

I've stared at that mom dog so long I can see a world map on her. She's sleeping and I am betting done except for that surprise puppy a little later on.

Question: At what point do you poke around for remaining puppies ?

In spite of questionable health testing, this was an awesome example of what a whelping should be like in so far as care and cleanliness, imo.

If anyone is still up watching, you can see her contractions become stronger, more frequent, and more productive, and you will see her start to push. She will glance around sharply at her hindquarters, too, just before she pushes out another one.

^^^Tips for all those who said they keep missing the actual delivery of each pup :)

Shame about the breeder and the lack of health testing--I guess I never realized how many here have never seen a bitch whelp.

I've helped with whelpings working for a couple breeders (not Dobermans, two other breeds) and also have helped with pregnant rescue bitches.

It is pretty awe-inspiring, and yes, many of the girls want you there, and do better with you there. The key is to be unobtrusive when appropriate, and what little bit I've seen on the feed, they look like the helpers are behaving very appropriately.

For all those who want birth to be a rapid, explosive occurence...watch a mare give birth.

Down, done, and over in twenty minutes or less, if everything goes well.

I just woke up to find 7 pups, 4 girls & 3 boys. I was just in time to see #8 delivered, but things don't look so good for him/her. I don't think he/she made it. :(

Wow, I haven't been watching them since they were born...just checked on them and they are huge! I will have to look at them again later because now they are just a sleeping, breathing, twitching puppy pile. :p

Holy crap! They're huge!!

[I say this as if it is a surprise that Great Dane puppies grow and are no longer the size they were when they were born.]

But holy crap....hugemongous. So cute, sleepy pups.
