| this isn't a doberman. i haven't been here in awhile. for a variety of reasons - some of them to do with this board. some of them personal. some of them not personal. ive been a variety of other places and have kept in touch with some of you, so some of you already know what this is...
this is not a doberman.
littler shots:
under 2 weeks old:
i even have pics of him at 20 minutes old and yes, with the tri markings i know exactly which one was him from the very start!!!!
and for the nosey busy bodies, yes, i went to the "dark side". i got a dog whose grandfather got his 1500th OTCH point at 12 years old. give me a dobe showing then and i'll gladly purchase from that line. great grandma is a triple champion (ob, breed, and herding). grandpa is still alive and well at 13, mom is showing and working on her OTCH, dad is working on his UD and his MACH. and I've lived with half brother (whelped his litter too), grandpa, and mom before. so im ready. so ready because ive currently got two dobermans retired at 6.5 and 4.5 and you know what? that sucks.
give me a dobe pedigree that looks like this and im alllllll in
so, that's introducing my newest. the fuzziest of the bunch. CHILL,
aka

| Congrats! What a cutie pie!!!
I empathize with your reasons. Best wishes on a long happy life with your new baby..
I was 2 seconds to getting out of dobes but a puppy from Introducing our new addition *pinches self* fell out of the sky into my lap, so I couldn't say no.
Nice to see you back here, if only for a moment. |

| enjoy your new little terror i know his pedigree well - in fact, i knew his gma (raisin) intimately and i know the prior breeding of pam burns' roar (littermate to your dogs mom) to gunnar that was done in upstate new york as well in 2011, and a littermate that karen wrey bred early in 2011 that just celebrated their first birthday i think. chris (blue chip) lives up the road figuratively from me, and i know a lot of blue chip dogs!!!

| Well welcome back from wherever you've been. You were missed.
I thought surely she knows that's a border collie. So does this have anything to do with agility. You were about out of room for large crates in your Dobemobile anyway.

| I guess not for you but for me it's not about having 18 million titles after the name, nor having the best dog out there! Hell if that was the case I probably would compete with a German Shepherd in Schutzhund.
For me it's about doing the best I can with the breed I have come to love. I will work my hardest at going as far as I possibly can with my dogs. BUT I will always do it with a Doberman.
Congrats on your new addition and enjoy the dark side!! |

Congrats on your new addition and enjoy the dark side!! | honestly i resent that entire implication.
my dogs and i LOVE TRAINING AND COMPETING. thats what we do - we enjoy going to class, going to shows. my dogs LOVE IT. i can't even TAKE rah right now because he screams the entire time i train cherry, thats how much he wants to. when i get ready on wed nights to go train berlin and rah tremble and whine and cry at the door because i leave them home - and it kills me. in fact, any reader of my blog knows i actually stopped training CHERRY for almost 4 months because it hurt so much that if i couldnt work rah, i wouldnt work anyone.
and right now i have two dogs ive invested 4+ years and over 20 thousand dollars in that are couch potatoes. id trade anything to have them happy and healthy, but they can't even RUN and PLAY sometimes without coming up lame because of their medical conditions. so im sorry, but screw all of you for telling me "ill always do it with a doberman" - tell me that when you retire your 4 year old because she has wobblers just at the start of her career, or your 6 year old dog 4 months later? ive had to retire TWO dobermans in the past 6 months because of their health. not because of any other reason at all. ive NEVER HAD A SINGLE DOBERMAN MAKE IT OVER TEN YEARS OLD - so sorry okie, but jasmine is your first dobe and you have not even been in the breed long enough to HAVE half the diseases ive lost my dogs to.
yes, i want to compete. i get my dogs specifically because i enjoy one sport in particular, and i want to do well in it - for me, if i show, i want to be the top. id love to do it with a doberman, but right now i haven't been able to keep a doberman healthy enough to DO IT. ive got cherry, and im still working her and training her, but i want and NEED and goddamn it, i DESERVE A DOG THAT WILL LIVE AND TRAIN AND WORK TIL TEN. and you know what, that isn't going to be a doberman. the only dobe ive seen working anywhere near that age shouldn't have been out showing, it was sad and depressing and the dog was in pain.
so im not going to apologize for getting a different breed - i didnt do it because i wanted to be better - you know what - border collies are top of both the obedience and agility world, i am not going to kick ass and take names. its much easier to be a big fish in a tiny sea with a doberman where i WAS a bigger deal - in the bc world im no one, and even if i get an OTCH on this dog i could still be no one - get an OTCH *point* on a doberman and you are NOI material. thats how SAD our working breed is. so spare me the "you switched breeds" talk because i have been there, done that. our breed sucks and i'll always have a doberman too - i started long before most of you and long after many others of you, but the fact is for many of us competing it has nothing - you have to be healthy, sound, and damn, you have to be ALIVE to be in the game. that's all i want - to be IN the game. the best i have and the most i can do has nothing to do when my dogs are pulled from the game early because they can't physically do it anymore.

| i know that seems like an overreaction. to put this in perspective.
berlins last time in the ring? wasn't even with me. lydia ran her because i was at work.
5 days before she had her MRI? we were all talking about time frames to make a serious run for top 20.
rah's last time in the ring? i spent half the time crying because he was lame and the judge upset me and i asked to be excused under my favorite judge because he was bleeding. we didn't even show in utility that day. i left nationals early last year and didn't even say goodbye to anyone.
so forgive me if "going to the darkside" is offensive. this border collie isn't going to be "easy" - he's a little ****, he bites and he's more difficult than any of my dobermans has been already. i didn't get him because he's going to be "easy" (though i did like that hes a breed with natural handler focus ha ha). i got him because i know his family, because his mother is the border collie version of rah (or is he the doberman version of her???) ,and they are long lived. if i have a chance of getting dogs *like* rah, im going to take them, which is why i kept cherry.

| I had a feeling you were going to get all resentful about what I said..lol!
Look your not the first to leave and go to the dark side. And I'm not saying it's such a bad thing. But ya know like you said your nobody in the BC world because, well it's much easier to get to the top with one. And that's not to say what you train in is easy, that's not what I am saying at all.
Honestly for me it's a challenge working with this breed. And by the way I guess cause you don't read here anymore I now have 3 Dobermans and not just Jasmine..lol! Your right I haven't been with the breed very long but I have had a Shepherd, Border Collie, Greyhound, JRT...etc. I know I will always have a Doberman in my life and that's what breed I will compete with. In fact I just brought home a puppy last Sunday to compete with.
I know you have had a lot of health problems with your dogs but I will say it's that much harder when your dogs are rescue's for the most part. Let me ask you a question, why was Bowie the only dog you purchased from a breeder? Let's face it your chances do improve some what when you go to a reputable breeder for a puppy.
And while I can understand why you did what you did, it's just always hard when someone leaves the breed. Especially someone who competes and trains as much as you. Enjoy your new puppy.

| you are confused. berlin is the only dog i obtained rom a breeder aside from chill. she is, ironically, the youngest i have retired.
she passed EVERY health clearance - the dog has her CHIC number. she also has wobbler's and now also has cancer, diagnosed two weeks ago.
and excuse me, but my rescues have had the best working temperaments of ANY of the dogs ive worked, period. i would put my RESCUE dobermans up against any of the other "well bred" dobermans seen at nationals. rah has more intrinsic drive, motivation, and work ethic than almost any other dog i know, of any breed. that dog will work to his own detriment - which is why it broke my heart to know he STOPPED working at nationals. because thats how much he hurt.
i enjoy the challenge of working with dobermans. I do not consider the RACE TO WORK THEM BEFORE THEY DROP DEAD a challenge. i consider that a heartbreak. i consider relegating them to crate rest at 4, at a lifetime of NSAIDs and supplements to maintain any sort of soundness sad. thats not a challenge. a challenge is problem solving, is fun, a challenge is trying to find new ways to figure things out. a challenge isnt some disappointing GAME OVER. that's what i have - GAME OVER. over and over and over. so stop sugar coating this.
my dogs are not getting their health problems because they are rescues. DO NOT KID yourself, lynn. do not every sit here and say that rescues get more health problems - look at pedigrees of dobermans and tell me that you think they are better bred? granted there are some things that good breeders test more than BYB (but if you want to know, cherrybomb has been PennHip'd and her hips are some of the best doberman hips you've ever seen!), and I haven't vWD tested her yet - but cardio, cancer, wobblers - we don't have tests, and those sticks hit every pedigree all the same.
i saw you got a new puppy. good luck, and i hope it stays healthy. but don't kid yourself that you are immune to health problems because you found a good breeder. cindy noland had WONDERFUL breeders and guess what her youngest dog she runs alongside her lone doberman now? a malinois. ask linda kurz how much health problems she's faced in the breed and don't tell me she didn't do her research in the lines. i could name dobe person after dobe person who now added another breed to the pack just to have something that may stand a chance of health, no other reason.
and for the record, my one breeder dog? with cancer and wobblers?
happens to share a pedigree with your cash. don't forget berlin's sire, gus is gio's brother.
this isn't attacking berlin's breeder, this isn't attacking anyone. this is to let you know that NO ONE is safe. your pedigree isn't free and clear. berlin and cash are related.

| and i haven't left the breed. but dobermans will not be my lone breed anymore.
i love the challenge of the doberman too. i love so much about them too.
but i spent 4 years training berlin. she's trained through utility in obedience, and ready for excellent in agility.
and she showed for 6 months and got her novice titles before i had to retire her. that's the extent of it. what that is is frustrating, becase for all the work, i dont know if anything would have come of it - i cant even train her anymore because she hurts too much. i dont know if what i was doing would work, i dont know how i would have continued, what i would have changed. all of the challenge is simply for nothing because that entire aspect of our relationship is GONE now and we BOTH miss it.
rinse, lather and repeat for rah.

| I’m happy you have a pup with the potential to be everything you have always wanted. I’ve fostered more breeds than I can count, and I think all breeds have something special to offer, as well as some faults. Border Collies are very fun to train. I am happy for you, as I would be for anyone who got a puppy to love and share their life with...
But I resent that you would come on here and say "Our breed sucks." I’m not trying to be confrontational, or start anything... especially since I’m new here... but I love this breed. Possible health issues included, and I owned one because I wanted a companion first. Anything else I could do with him was just a bonus. I don’t mean to say you don’t love all your dogs equally, competitors or not…
I can totally see your side of things, and I can understand the frustration you feel over having to retire a dog at 4. I won’t even add in the devastation of having a dog you love suffer an illness of any kind. Every breed has its enthusiast, as well as its haters. And it’s not a crime to have TWO breeds. I myself love newfies as much as dobes. Variety just sweetens the pot.
I guess I just mean to say… I love dobes, and it hurts and frustrates me to read those words. It’s totally ok, understandable, and reasonable, to “go to the dark side” as I’ve seen it called... just be a little more conciderate when you talk about other breeds. I dont much care for terriers(excluding bullys) but i would never put one down around someone who owns and loves one.
