Talking San Diego Casa de Mandingo's

Meet our new addition to the family: Diego!

So we ended up taking a pup from my trainer's bouvier litter from Casa de Mandingo's kennel. I will be working him in schutzhund, but he will be my mom's dog. We just brought him home today, I love him!! His coat is soooo soft and he loves being groomed. Its amazing because with all that hair, he doesn't shed...so much nicer than our past GSDs. He is 16 weeks, and tugs like a total natural.

Of course he and Hans will be kept separated. Though they are both companions, they are treated as working dogs and do not play with other dogs anyway.

I will post pics and videos as they come!

Congrats! He's a cutie. I've only known one Bouvier, and she was owned by someone who really shouldn't have had her. Not trained at all and walked all over him. Her protective instincts weren't channeled properly, so she had some undesirable behaviors. I always thought it was too bad she ended up where she did. She was spoiled and loved, but just not the right home for that kind of dog.

More pictures!

I wasn't even aware the Bouvier did protection sports until I started with this club, but I have been very interested in them ever since. The trainers have over 40 years of experience with both Bouvs and Malinois and they have said the Bouvs can be more difficult between the two. These dogs definitely love their work, I can imagine what one would be like under someone who didn't direct that drive in the right place. Similar to dobes in that respect.

This little guy is just a wonderful handful! Hopefully I can get some more pictures soon, its been so gloomy outside lately.

He is adorable. I know nothing of the sport and training. Do you feed his regular meal like this to get him to follow and focus? Great idea. I also didn't realize working dogs were not allowed to play with other dogs. Does that also take their focus from you? I'm amazed at his focus at such a young age. Beautiful pup.

Great idea.

Usually I use hotdogs for training in obedience but Diego isn't too crazy about them right now, so yes, I do feed part of his kibble like this. Normally I will do some obedience before his evening meal or tracking before his morning meal so he is hungry. I'm using the food as a lure so he starts hearing the commands (heel, sit, down, come) and associating them with a positive thing, and a position.

I also didn't realize working dogs were not allowed to play with other dogs. Does that also take their focus from you?

Yes, at this age I want him to learn that interaction with me is the most exciting thing in his world. He does get exposure to other dogs, but only dogs that are neutral, don't care about him, and won't engage in play. He does need to learn to be neutral to dogs, but not look to them for interaction. I didn't raise Hans like this, and I can see a total difference in this pup's interaction with me and how Hans was at this age.

I'm amazed at his focus at such a young age. Beautiful pup.

Thank you! I am having so much fun with him Everything in training at this age is always wonderful and building up the dog, no pressure, just fun!

What's the grooming like with these guys? A lot of work? He's a handsome pup, I can't wait to see how he does. The picture of him running with the stick is my favorite.

He is so much fun!
At this age he isn't much different from Hans in overall craziness. We call Diego the alligator because the first thing that comes at you is teeth. Hans never was mouthy like that.

I have been grooming him myself. Maintenance isn't bad, brushing at least every other day with a slicker brush against the "grain" of the fur. They don't shed, but the coat is very fluffy and fine so it will get matted.

I like the coat pretty short, not like the show coat...and he won't have a "fall". Right now I have only clipped his body and left the legs. I use a 10 blade with a comb--can't remember what size, probably about 3/4 of an inch wide. I don't have the right blade for his head so I have just trimmed that a little with scissors but I didn't do a very good job!

I like the length of his coat right now for winter. I will do a shorter cut for the summer, probably about 1/2 inch long.

He loves being groomed. The noise of the clippers and the dremel was a little scary at first, but now he will stand or lie down to be clipped...so much better than my Yorkie.

What I like about their coat is it doesn't carry that dog smell. It does, however, carry other foreign objects.

What a cute pup! I loved the video. I know you will do great things with this pup. We have only ever had one bouvier in our grooming shop; don't see them too often. I cannot wait to see him grow and his progression with his training!

ps - if you ever have any grooming questions, or what to buy PM me.

Thanks! I should really learn how to groom the right way. All of the bouvs at the club are either groomed by the trainers or the trainers teach the handlers so I have a good reference on how to groom the bouvs. Right now I have just clipped him to take off the damaged hair on his body so he doesn't look so rough. I clip horses on a weekly basis, so I know how to use clippers...just not so much the technique with dogs.

Had Bouvier's for 20 years great dog's both of mine were from heavy schutzhund backgrounds. My first one came home from the groomer's with a Kerry Blue terrier haircut I decided to start dong them myself. The breeder was a great help even long distance I keep them fairly short since they were not show dogs. Centauri Kennels is where I got both of mine in Ill.The 1st Bouv CJ we got his CGC & CD the 2nd Bouv had Megaesophagus so could not show him.He did live to be about 9 years old the vet called him her miracle dog.Lott's of brushing & wet beards but still great dogs.

So neat! It is rare that I hear of someone that used to or currently has a Bouv, but whenever I do they always say how great they were. I hope Diego turns out like that too. He is actually my mom's dog, I'm just training him for schutzhund. I think this was the right breed for her. What I love about his lines is I have seen three generations working on the field, some even in their teen years. That is rare!

His breeder has asked us to keep him intact until he gets his titles as she has the option to use him in her breeding program. She wants to use a male from this combination but there are two or three very nice males from the litter so I am excited to see how they turn out.
