Am I crazy or what? But my son has always wanted a few and I must admit, they are cute. So we went to the Ferret Rescue in Denver and got 3 bonded guys.

So, without further ado, I present:

Our two 1 1/2 year olds--we kept all of their original names. Do you think their original owner had an interest in the military?

DOOLITTLE

SHERMAN

And our older guy, 4 1/2 years old. He generally doesn’t look as old as he does in this picture (he is a natural silver), but this is the only even remotely non-blurry picture we could get. They do move fast.

Oh dear!

These guys follow everyone around like puppies--I think they are so curious they want to know everything that is going on and want to be involved. I have learned to shuffle around whenever they are out so I won’t step on them. They are always between my feet (literally) trying to see what I am doing.

I guess it’s like it is with dobermans--early socialization is important.

They are cute.

They sure do get into everything, though. And I mean EVERYTHING!
Yup; we’ve learned. Fortunately they don’t jump very well.

Chickens are evil. Take a look at them close up sometime.

"The Hen" by Lord Alfred Douglas

The hen is a ferocious fowl,
She pecks you 'til she makes you howl.

And all the time she flaps her wings,
And says the most insulting things.

And when you try to take her eggs,
She bites large pieces from your legs.

The only safe way to get these
Is to creep on your hands and knees.

In the meanwhile a friend must hide,
And jump out on the other side.

And then you snatch the eggs and run,
While she pursues the other one.

The difficulty is, to find
A trusty friend who will not mind.

As Eegreen says: Yes, they are cute!

As Stryker says: Yes, you are crazy!

And Spocksdad says: Awaiting video posting of Doolittle, et. al. frolicking on Kip's head and back while he lays docilely on the deck. :grin2:

They mostly seem to be little balls of curiosity and poop to me. They are totally bendable and ooze in and out of your hands like a Slinky toy.

Actually ferrets are more closely related to dogs--mongooses, which look ferrety, are more closely related to cats. While I was looking that up, I found this: "The ferret is closer biologically and physiologically to humans than the mouse or the rat.” A ringing endorsement!

The bathroom in the basement is free roaming territory--they are only allowed in the basement rec room, the bathroom and the hallway down there (not the son’s room which is also in the basement--gotta draw the line somewhere). It is a garden level basement, fully finished with lots of natural light.

We use newspaper (on top of plain white washable paneling) for their pottys--just roll it up,do a wet paper towel wipe and you’re done. They mostly use the paper in their cage and in the bathroom--”mostly" being the key word here. So they don’t get the fun of watching things flush.

Though if you are kneeling to try to reach the paper in the bathroom (yes, behind the toilet :rolleyesww:), they can and will climb up your back trying to get to the sink, where they were allowed to play in the water once (grrrrr son).

Ferrets may seem attention deficit, but they REMEMBER.
