New puppy

So i got another dog to take over for my older dog when she passes. When i got her i thought that she was a german shepherd or german shepherd mix, but now that she has gotten a little older she dosen't quite look like a german shepherd except for her coat. After looking into some other breeds a little more i think that she may be a belgian malinois with a bi-color coat, but i am having some trouble finding anymore info about bi-color malinois, was woundering if anyone on here could point me in a direction or has more info about them.

Aww, she's a beauty. She looks like a German Shepherd to me, but I'm no expert.

Do you have any pics of her standing & a head shot or two?

Your dobe is very cute, BTW.

Your pup is beautiful! She looks like a GSD to me too, but a face pic would help a lot.

Another vote for GSD. She looks like she might be a patterned sable, rather than a bicolor.

Doesn't much look like a Belgian Malinois to me. Looks much more like a German Shepherd cross.

AKC standard only allows "rich fawn to mahogany, with black tips on the hairs giving an overlay appearance. The mask and ears are black. The underparts of the body, tail and breeches are lighter fawn..."

However AKC recognises only three types of Belgian shepherd (Malinois, Tervuren and Sheepdog)--Belgium and France recognise four--and if I've ever seen even a picture of the fourth type I don't remember it.

But the Malinois does not come in a bi-color except as noted above--a fawn dog with a black mask and ears.

They can be "mismarked" and have an extensive overlay with only the legs and belly being fawn. They can also have the odd solid black (our PD had a solid black bitch), but those colors/patterns usually only occur in area where interbreeding the varieties is common. The US is (I think) the only country that splits them into different breeds, instead of one breed with four varieties.

Yeah, I think you are right about AKC maybe being the only registry that splits them into different "breeds" rather than different varities--can't remember what Canada does-they might do different breeds too.

Before they were AKC recognised they used to be interbred here too--you occasionly get a short coated Tervuren or Sheepdog. I have seen a black and tan Sheepdog out of many generations of black AKC Sheepdogs.

But the body type looked more GSD than Belgian to me--somewhat longer in body and shorter on leg.

FWIW, Canada includes all 4 varieties under the name Belgian Shepherd Dog.

From Wiki--the fourth variety--The Laekenois has wiry, overall fawn-colored hair but with intermingled white hairs. It lacks the black mask and ears of the Malinois, which is often also a light brown; however, most breed standards permit some darker shading on the muzzle, and on the tail.

Thanks Mary,

It's been almost 15 years since I've shown dogs in Canada and for some of the breeds I don't remember which ones and how they differ from AKC breeds.

I assume that like the three Belgian sheep dogs that AKC recognises the main difference is coat color and length for the 4th variety. I have to go run some errands but I guess I'll have to look it up this evening.

LOL--now I don't have to look it up--I must have been typing while Melbrod was putting up the pictures and descriptions of the Laekenois.

UKC recognizes the Laekenois as a variety of Belgian Sheepdog. The AKC considers them a separate breed, and has them in the Miscellaneous class.

There are a lot of different "types" of GSD. My Leo looks like she is partly West German show line style GSD and partly American BYB. Your girl looks more like a working line GSD. Neither of them look like an American show line type GSD.

I'm no expert lol, but my guess is GSD with one parent fully black and the other sable.

More likely, one parent is sable and one parent is black and tan, since black is recessive in GSD.
