| | Big Dog | I just find it funny that they wont allow a doberman in your apt, but will allow a boxer... One of my good friends got a boxer puppy the week before i got calvin, and his dog is 10 times as much of a handful as calvin is. including much more aggressive and noisy (the two issues i can see being relevant to apt rules). Dont get me wrong i love boxers, i just think for an apt a doberman would fit MUCH better than a boxer.

| My older brother had a Weim and a rescued Greyhound (who was euthanized last year with a brain tumor). They both were great dogs, and the Weim was well mannered.
That being said, Zoe (the weim) did manage to push my 6ft 5, 350lb brother down the basement stairs as a teenager.
I adored Malley, the greyhound. He got her a week off the track, and I dogsat her a week later. What a complete sweetheart! She was scared of stairs at first, having never seen them before. She was also terrified of my mom's cat. The cat put her in a corner of the kitchen and then proceeded to eat her food. She was in race weight at the time, and I was terrified of walking her, since the one time I did I had two comments about needing to feed that poor poor dog.
I've known lots of nutty Weims too, but I think they were most likely poorly bred and under exercised. If you can commit to keeping their bodies exercised I think a Weim could do well in an apartment.
Personally I would choose a greyhound, but I love the breed. If I weren't in love with Dobes I would totally have a greyhound.

| If you want a working/hunting breed you HAVE to be committed to exercising the dog morning and night. The brighter the breed, the more easily bored they become, and when bored, your couch may become the next stuffie it wants to rip apart. Keep in mind that a rescue group may prefer that you have a fenced-in area for your dog to exercise in.
My advice would be to rescue a smaller breed of dog and when you have more space, then get your dream Dobe. |

| Think long and hard and do lots of research before you decide on a Boxer. We've just recently moved to TX and had one heck of a time finding a house that would rent to certain breeds - obviously Dobes were one of the breeds but I was shocked when I learned that Boxers had made their way onto the list as well!

| I definitely agree with the greyhound suggestion. They are such dolls and there are so many in rescues. They make great companions.
Carol has had weims in the past, so maybe she could give you some input? I personally would be afraid to have one in such confined quarters because they are very energetic. The same thing goes for boxers, but that's just me.
Are you dead set on getting a large breed? There are lots of small breeds that do much better in an apartment than large breeds do. Plus, with a little dog, you don't have to worry about as many restrictions for size and/or breed.

| all 3 of those breeds have a LOT of energy. I love all 3 though. Have you check out your local shelter yet? You may be surprised on what you will fall in love with!
I do agree that a retired greyhound is a fabulous idea.

| | Lil Pup | I personally love larger dogs...and have had hunting/sport dogs throughout my childhood (hence the Weim and GSP on the list).
At this point, thanks in part to the advice listed here (and in part to advice garnered elsewhere), I am going to go with an adoption of some sort. I just feel like I can "make a difference" for at least one dog that may not get such an opportunity otherwise. Plus, this way I won't be waiting on the Doberpup for long once I do get settled into a house! |

You'll never regret a rescue, my Poseidon was adopted 11 years ago on July 1st and he's been the best dog ever!

| Great decision! My London was adopted 6 years ago. She has been such a joy.

| my brother has a GSP and he runs her a ton everyday. He takes her to his produce warehouse and works her out in a near by field, then brings her home and has to take her to the dog park for an hour+ just to get her to relax in the evenings, by 6am the next day she is ready. Makes for a great hiking dog since she really does last all day with us. He lacked some training time with her so that might be an issue as to her obssesion with tennis balls and not listening to well. I'm sure if you take the time any dog will work out. |
