| the chicks are fledging I found Jr here in my front yard this morning while I was watering. I hate it when they start dropping out of their nests to fledge, it makes me nervous and I have to sit on my front porch and do loose cat/dog/snake patrol.

| Oh Jeeze - Louise has killed two baby robin's and a baby rabbit already this year. The robin's are the worst at trying out their wings right when the dogs are in the yard............ it never fails. They build nests under our deck - we have a walk out basement and our deck is 9 feet up in the air. Usually the baby birds make it to the fence, but for some reason they left too soon this year and before I knew it, she had gotten two of them. We have another nest of robins under there right now

Great you are being a lookout for the birds. Best of luck!

| No, it isn't a robin, it's some sort of grey and black finch.

| Java hasn't gotten a bird, Rexx came close to getting a baby squirrel that wandered into the dog run, but son spotted it first and got to it before Rexx did. Java snagged her first squirrel on the nature trail. Hubby said she walked around very proud of herself for a while, would not give it up altho she is generally very good at the 'drop it' command - esp when it comes from him - but evidently not good enough. Looks like we'll be going over this again until she drops things on command.
One thing I've noticed is that if Java obeys a command immediately, Rexx will do the same. If she gets into her 'teenage' let-me-think-about-this attitude, he will follow suit. |

| I suspect Red got a robin last week. An adult though. I found it dead out in the yard.. I don't know how else it would have died in our yard if the dog hadn't killed it? I haven't seen any babies though. |

| I've spent the morning google-researching and they are house sparrows. Another baby, much smaller than the first also dropped from the nest yesterday. I'm wondering if our extremely unseasonably hot (103) weather yesterday might have had something to do with it. I put both babies back in the nest and I'm happy to report the parents have been feeding them constantly and all seems to be well.

| DROP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have had to scream that out a few times this year. Magic, Koko Puff and I were on a hike the other day, all of a sudden the adult robins were chirping and dive bombing Magic. I raced back down the trail yelling drop it, but as Magic is new he doesn't know what that means. SO I retrieved the baby robin from his jaws, it was a little dirty and disheveled and covered with Magic slobber but it was well enough to run off into the bushes. I hope it made it but I had to get Magic back into the hiking mode so he would leave the poor little robin alone. I will have to work on DROP IT with that boy. |
