FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Police say burglars shot and killed a family dog while breaking into a Frankfort house and stealing a computer.

Frankfort police say homeowner Sandra Ferrell returned home for lunch Monday afternoon to find her house had been broken into and her beloved dog, Chloe, a German shepherd mixed breed, had been shot to death in the kitchen.

Police say the only item missing from the house was an older-model Dell computer.

Frankfort County Animal Control officers say the incident marked the first time they have responded to a dog being killed during a burglary.

Terrible thing to happen, so sad about the dog, thank god the lady of the house wasn't there at the time as well.
The shepherd mix was obviously doing it's job trying to protect the home and they killed it.

My goodness. My heart just broke into a million pieces. That poor woman and that poor dog. I hope the dog at least got a nice chunk of meat out of those b&st&rds first.

That's exactly what I was thinking...

That really is a terrible thing. I hope they get the thieves and bury them under the jail.

Very sad same thing happened to a young Bouvier he was not shot he was stabbed owner found him on their bed. He had a Dog Door where he could have left but he was trying to protect his home. Several weeks later the guy was caught had dog bites.

I thought of that story when I read this, I'll never forget what he said about it .."they could have taken whatever they wanted but they didn't have to take my dog" it was so sad ...I hate stuff like this.

A computer? How sick is that? What a horrible thing to have happen. It reminds me of the dog in Windsor, who had his back broken by robbers when they broke in. His owner came home to not just a ransacked home but a dog in his living room who was wimpering in pain and couldn't move.

It's stories like these that encourage me to promote an alarm system to people instead of relying on a "guard" dog to protect your home while you're away. The safest place for a pet is a crate.
