| Hi from California Hello everyone! I had a Doberman several years ago and would love to have another. I've been into primarily German Shepherds for most of my life and since I have horses also have the obligatory terriers, 2 Cairns and a JRT for rodent control. I am planning on browsing the site and learning as much about the different "types" so I can make the right choice for my lifestyle, being into German Shepherds I understand the importance of going with very reputable breeders. I am interested in a black and rust female, if anyone can recommend a reputable breeder in California that would be great, though I'm not adverse to shipping. The dog in my avatar, my Alta-Tollhaus Gavin was purchased ffom a kennel in Michigan. Gavin is V rated, Schutzhund 3 and siring beautiful puppies, including 3 litters for Leaderdogs for The Blind, he's currently on lease for breeding and I'm wanting just another large companion dog to have with me as I ride my horses on the trails etc.. |

| Hello from Texas and welcome to DT!
I always had GS's all my life. Decided to get a Doberman when I found myself without any dogs. Did a lot of research and was on DT for a while before I made my decision. Best decision I ever made.
There are several members here who currently have both a Dobe and a GS.
Your Gavin is sure handsome. We would like to see more pictures please. |

| Welcome to the forum! My former trainer has an Alta-Tollhaus girl.
Are you looking at working lines or show? American or European?

I have one four year old girl from a terrible breeder (I have learned so much about breeders since getting her!), and my new pup is from North American showlines, and he's everything I was looking for: great health and longevity in the pedigree, wonderful temperament. He's not overly drivey, but smart as a whip and learns quickly. We'll be trying out agility and rally, probably do some Nosework, maybe therapy work down the road. He's pretty perfect for a companion dog who's up for trying anything but can settle easily in the house (well, settle for a puppy!).

| Hi there, welcome from another Southern Californian! Your GSD in your avatar is gorgeous.
There are a lot of threads on here that talk about N. American vs Euro lines and working vs. show lines. As a very generalized statement (and I am no expert on this) my impression is that working lines are likely to have higher drive and may be able to recover from stress a little better, perhaps may also be a bit sharper. But some show line breeders also breed dobes who do pretty well in performance and have a good level of drive. The "look" of American vs Euro is going to differ as well. If you try the search function on here you should be able to find a number of threads on this topic.
It really boils down to what your interests are and what you are looking for.
There are not that many breeders in this area that come to mind. A few to check out would be Montwood/Arista in San Diego (show lines but they also breed dogs that do pretty well in agility, so probably pretty good drive), Aldercrest (more working lines), and if you were going more for N American show lines, Winmar and Pennylane in Las Vegas breed some lovely dogs.
This breed has a lot of health issues so regardless of which direction you go in, be sure to do your research and ask lots of questions. Good luck!
