Excited 1st-time Dobe owners! - Doberman Forum : Doberman Breed Dog Forums

Hi everyone!

After much research and searching, we finally put down a deposit for our first Doberman, to be born mid-late March.

We visited Linda of Ramsey Dobigang in Hewitt, NJ, where we met her beautiful dobes, including the father and mother of our future puppy. We instantly fell in love with the father and hope our dobe will grow to be much like him! Thankfully Linda was very nice and patient with our many, many questions.

As first timers, we were unsure of the breeders at first, but after meeting Linda and her dobes, we have high hopes. We'll keep you posted on the experience and will post pics as soon as we can.

In the meantime, any advice for us?

Congratulations. Just got our first Dobe puppy after raising Belgian Malinois for numerous years, and we're thrilled with our new choice of breed.
Hoping you have a wonderful pup and are off to a roaring start...

Just a question for you... what health testing do they do with their "pet" dogs?
And do they do anything but obedience with them (i.e. show, agility, etc.)

Who are parents?
They do have a facebook, and their website had little to no info on their dogs...

We are getting a male black and rust...hopefully. From what we understand, there is no guarantee that there will be one available for us. We are number #2 on the list so our fingers are crossed.

As far as testing, I really have no idea. I THINK they give basic first shot? Id have to ask the mrs. on that one as i forgot.
I dont know if they offer obedience training but they do offer help after the pup comes home and they were very nice and helpful. I can tell you more after all is said and done and give a more detailed review afterwards.
as far as the parents...i forgot the name of the b itch but the fathers name was vader. vader has been in westminster i believe...2 times?
sorry, this was so NOT helpful. I am a newb and hope to learn more to help others that are in my position now for the years to come.

I would look more into doberman diseases before you settle on this breeder. Shots are not testing.

I am by no means telling you NO! to this puppy or this breeder, but personally, I would think long and hard before purchasing a pup from them.

Please look this over and scour the website for all things dobie.

^^^ Please ask these questions to your breeders and be provided PROPER proof of testing (should be on several databases... not just from vet records)

They also have a breeder referral on the site to better refer you to breeders in good standing with the organization.

Here is an example of a reputable breeder:

I have heard that these dogs are just beautiful. They are listed with many other breeders on the DPCA site.

There are also some reputable breeders on this forum who can better direct you with any questions you may have.

You also want to do background checks on dams and sires. If the sire of the litter has been to something as BIG as Westminster, his name should be on the site of the link below:

Dobequest.org

^^is a good listing to use to do this background research. Breeders will post results of tests on their dogs, titles from shows, and you can view the lineage of the pet as far back as possibly known.

IMHO I would ask what lines are poorly bred on the site and make sure these lines are from good stock.

Bold, mine:

Their site listing stated that THEIR dogs are in obedience training. At least that is what their page on BreederNET.com stated.

Welcome from Florida! My boy will be 1 year in March. I was just where you are last year at this time. The waiting will feel like forever. I learned so much from the members and article here before I brought Jackson home. We love pictures!

do you find the dobe to have less/equal/more energy than the malinois?

Hi, Welcome to Doberman Talk. I'd like to step up to the plate here and say that I have personally seen Leah Ramsey at many dogs shows showing not only her dog but others. I am very impressed with her. Very professional, very talented. This is a good family to get a dog from. You'll be getting a good dog. Good Pedigrees. You won't be disappointed.

Welcome to DT. I love the Ramsey's male "Vader" (Ch Gmee Starfox Knight Cha-Rish), and Leah does a very nice job handling the dogs.

Congratulations from Indiana!

Jasmine is my rescue dobergirl. She is my first doberman, and I just sort of leaped right into it after I met her and knew she was my dog! I probably should have done more research, but I wanted to get her out of shelter life ASAP. I've fallen completely in love with the breed! They're such loving companions and they're so so sooooo silly!!
