| Thank you everyone'! I absolutely adore her! She is currently on about a 1 lb of satin balls and Earthborn Grain Free. Just finally getting over her diarrhea and bladder infection thanks to some natural mess and probiotics. She also has a nasty case of kennel cough... Poor baby!
I just love her! She curled up next to me as we speak with her head draped across my back! |

I just love her! She curled up next to me as we speak with her head draped across my back! | I wouldn't get too excited about trying to feed her up. Don't worry about satin balls - she is not that skinny, not really. Satin balls are for dogs that don't want to eat or can't eat enough for the amount of calories they need. You may end up giving her loose stools instead.
I would only be trying to put on a few pounds - she is very lightly built and quite elegant. Her chest is quite shallow meaning she will never be able to carry a lot of weight. She is one of nature's athletes - built more like a marathon runner than a sprinter. I would like to see those ribs more covered, but we do prefer to be able to see the last 2 ribs for a dog in good weight. Keeping them lighter is better than heavy. My 8mth bitch weighs 50lb, what does Elsie weigh?
She looks like a total dober-love - a velcro dog for sure. I love that they want to live inside your skin with you. Given the choice (and many of us do), she will sleep on the bed with you under the bedclothes. She will want to lay right alongside you touching as much of you as possible. That's how she is from your description and the photos. Just adorable!!
Thank you so much for giving her a new wonderful life. I hope you have lots of questions for us and you will get lots of answers. Thanks.

Thank you so much for giving her a new wonderful life. I hope you have lots of questions for us and you will get lots of answers. Thanks. | Hi there and thank you for the helpful info! Elsie is estimated to be at about a year old. She weighed in at 43 pounds when she left the shelter 3 days ago. My vet estimated her to be 18-30 pounds underweight. She is about a 2 on the body scale. I personally have had a lot of success with the satin balls--especially with one of my poodle bitches that is impossible to keep weight on when she is nursing a litter. It just breaks my heart to see Elsie almost instantly shiver upon going outside because she has no body mass to help keep her temp up.
You are SO right about them wanting to practically live in your skin! SO clingy! Can definitely be annoying when you eat it in a parking lot because she has her whole body wrapped around you and you trip on her legs!
She would LOVE to sleep in our bed! However she can be very restless at night and is absolutely SMOOSHES me to the point of non breathing! So until she establishes a routine and learns not to whine she gets to sleep in a kennel type setup with lots of cozy blankets and chew toys. After her morning potty break, she gets to come in and snuggle with us for the last couple hours of sleep.
She is already leaning basic commands and learning the routine of the household. She is the sweetest and everybody that meets her has fallen in love. Dobes are not a common breed to see in Idaho, and most people have a negative perception. Her looks alone are enough to cause people to give her a wide berth. It's silly. I do however feel very safe having her with me. |
