Hi Ya'll, from Northwest Arkansas! 😃

Greetings from Bella Vista, AR! We've recently been blessed with the addition of a new family member, Samson! ❤ He's 8 weeks old, and the most precious little thing! (Actually, getting bigger...literally by the day!) We weren't sure we wanted his ears cropped at first, but have now decided to go ahead with it. Can anyone recommend someone who will do a beautiful job and do it it RIGHT? (ex: no "mummy" ears to get gooey/infected)?

One of the benefits with going with a reputable breeder is that the ears come cropped and ready to post.

Is this your first time with ear cropping? It can be hard on both owners and puppies so prepare yourself well. Once the actual surgery is over (and btw it is CRITICAL to go with a Doberman specialist - so many terrible croppers out there), there will be healing time and then posting time. Some pups only need to be posted for a month or so, others much much longer.

There is a thread here somewhere with recommendations for cropper in various states. Good luck.

Welcome.

I assume that the "mummy"ears that you arereferring to are these...?

That has nothing to do with how good or bad a crop is but, instead, is a method of getting the ears to stand.

As for vets, I cannot recommend any in your area. Who does your boy's breeder use?

Welcome to DT. Pick your cropper carefully. Some vets do a crappy job.

I would recommend sending a private message to member "jdd." She's in Arkansas and can probably help you out. There are very few good croppers in the country, so this might involve a long drive to get to the right vet. Be prepared for posting for a while...some pups are done around six months old, but some can take up to a year. Make sure you are completely committed to posting ears (as in the picture posted above). They don't stand without religious posting.

If you aren't sure you really want to do all of that, leave your pup's ears natural. It's a lot easier!

I really hate how people assume because a puppy is not cropped that it did not come from a reputable/responsible breeder. Especially without knowing the breeder a pup came from.

There are breeders out there who are reputable and responsible who dont always crop the ears. Especially if an owner is not sure they want it done. Pets really do not have not be cropped and some people prefer a pet to be left natural.

What about Dr. Stanton from Fayettville? He has cropped several of my mother's dogs incuding a childhood Dobe and current Great Dane. His crops seem very acceptable as well. I think he is close to retirement and may not be doing as much tho...

There are very few responsible breeders who will leave ears uncropped, particularly with an inexperienced owner. Yes, there are a few who will leave a pup uncropped, more likely a working breeder or with a new owner who has a lot of experience and credibility in the breed. I cannot think that any responsible breeder would leave a pup uncropped to go home with someone who was undecided about cropping, and is now left to find their own cropping vet and manage the aftercare without help.

It is absolutely true that an ethical breeder would not allow a new owner to flounder on their own for a cropping vet.

OP, I hope you check out the vet jdd referred you to and you get a beautiful crop. There are also people on the forum that would likely help you with posting to show you how it's done so you can get the hang of doing it yourself.

We'd love to see more pics of your pup!

A lot of people don't think about the uncropped dobes that sit in rescue generally a lot longer than cropped ones. The majority of applicants are looking for a c/d dobe. As sad as some people think it is, the cropped looked helps get a Doberman into a home faster.

I also think there is truth in the statement made because if a responsible puppy buyer is wanting an uncropped puppy, that is an arrangement that would be made before the litter is born. I don't think that most reputable breeders on our side of the pond would leave litters or some of the puppies uncropped hoping that someone who prefers floppy ears will come along.

The assumption wasn't based just on the fact that it was an uncropped puppy, it was based on the fact that they have an uncropped puppy AND are looking for a cropping vet. There is a distinct difference.

No reputable breeder would EVER allow an owner to be "undecided". They either crop or they don't. They would not allow an owner to change their mind after the fact, and be okay with the new owners taking the puppy to a cropping vet of their (owner's) choice. That just doesn't happen! It's a recipe for disaster in the making. So yes, we can assume they are from less than the best in terms of breeders.

Only in select handful of cases (usually imports) will the owner be the one having to handle the cropping (depending on the country of origin).

ETA: Glad to see the OP has found a good vet to go to for cropping!

Yikes! I just wanted to poke my head in & say "Hi", lol! But in all seriousness, even though not everyone on Dobermantalk.com agrees with one another at all times, one thing (at least to me) is apparent--everyone loves their dobies, and respects the breed (wanting the best for it)! Newbies like me are sometimes going to make mistakes, but ultimately, having this platform to discuss important issues provides education for all who care to become more knowledgeable! It's like my former Pastor used to say..."You can't go back and change the past, but you can begin today to work towards a better future"!

Kudos to you. Thank you for being open minded and wanting to learn! There is so much knowledge available here. Everyone makes mistakes, and the ability to learn from yours (global you) is what sets people apart.
