Smile Hello from new Dober owner!

After many years of faithful companionship, my chow/lab/border mix of 12 years that had grown up with me passed away Oct 18 I wasn't sure that I was ready to move on but I went to see a doberman pup for "sale", only to find she was being poorly cared for - kept outside, not nearly enough socialization, apparently improper tail docking, and no shots. Her parents, sire already neutered were in worse shape. They were both slightly injured and in a yard 24/7 with no toys or love, apparently. I have always loved Dobies, even though I have never owned one, and I just couldn't say no - even though I get the feeling she would be a monster dog when she grows up (the parents were quite large).

I brought her home and named her Hope. She is a wonderful little girl and has stolen my heart - being owned by a Doberman is so far all I have wished for and expected. It won't be long and she'll be going to her first vet visit and getting her shots. Just within days of coming home she came into herself - following us by command around the yard with no lead, walking on lead like she'd been taught, behaving perfectly when visiting and socializing with others, following me underfoot, and potty training is going so much better than I expected. She sleeps with me at night, curling up as close as she can get, and I swear it's like she knows how much I miss my previous dog and how much I already love her.

I get the feeling we are going to be inseparable as she grows!

Welcome to the forums. I sure hope that the pup's parents are alright.

Funny how you seem to know about improper tail docking, and improper socialization but play the "I felt sorry for it" card. Hmmmm.

What do you plan to do about the parents. What is the name of the breeder?

I do as well. Unfortunately the female had behavioral issues, and I can admit that I don't have the experience needed to give her a healthy, good home. I asked about the male but unfortunately they were only "selling them as a pair". People who keep dogs like that don't deserve them in the first place, IMHO

I know the docking was improper because it hasn't healed correctly. To the best of my research (of which I've done an incredible amount), that indicates the docking wasn't done right.

As for socialization, that goes for any dog... you can tell when someone has cared for a dog and when they haven't. Yes, I did feel sorry for her and I wouldn't have "bought" her, more like rescued, if the male hadn't have been fixed as I don't perpetuate or support BYB's. I brought her home when she was 3 months old, when all the other pups had been sold prior. They aren't breeders, nor a mill. Apparently they bred them once and elected not to again once they realized how much it costs to breed them.

I don't appreciate being attacked as soon as I come onto the forum. If you'd like to "play that card" I'll be happy to move along elsewhere so I don't have to deal with attitudes I don't care to associate with

I don't know what qualifies as an ethical breeder for hedgehogs but you paid an unethical breeder of dogs, lining his pockets, for your puppy. I'm sorry if your welcome wasn't sunshine and flowers but please realize where you've come.

This is a doberman-specific forum which, obviously, has some very passionate doberman lovers (some of which spend more time, money, and energy than I, a grad student, has spent on school). This forum does have a manifesto - it's stickied at the top of the new member's section - that speaks about how passionate the members here tend to be and what type of breeders they support. If you consider where you are I would find it be hard to be surprised that you're welcome isn't great when you lined a horrible person's pockets for a puppy while her parents (who were in worse shape than the puppy, as per your words) still suffer.

I think the same qualities for being an ethical breeder of anything are basically the same.

To me, a breeder is someone who fancies the breed or species and promotes good care, training, socialization, breeding for betterment, etc and someone who actively breeds for more than just once. Anyone else is a BYB, and yes, I feel they are people who should not own the animals or have anything to do with breeding. Had this been a puppy mill, no, I would not have brought her home and had I have been able to bring the parents home, I would have. Further more, nobody has any clue how much I paid to bring her home - and let me assure you, it was hardly padding their pockets. Once again, I reiterate that the male was fixed and they were both for sale. They obviously saw that breeding was not a profitable scheme and moved on. If the parents had been starving, or had I felt they were being actively abused or seriously neglected, I would have filed a complaint. The male was limping on one paw and the girl was a little thin in my opinion. Not something that would exactly raise eyebrows to most. Had I had the ability or the experience required to take a dog like the female in I would have taken them both, unfortunately I don't and there's nothing I could do on the situation. I'm personally glad that I have my dog and she will be raised in a wonderful environment with an owner that adores her.

I am not complaining on the welcome, I am quite frankly flat out saying that if the people of the forum enjoy attacking new members and shoving their viewpoints down others throats, then I won't be participating. It's very good and well to have your opinion on whatever subject, and stating it is also good and well, but not attacking others when said person, in fact, quite basically gave a dog a home when it didn't really have one.

This is why I had always stayed away from specific breed fanicers forums before, even though yes, I have a love of dobies. You can all enjoy your community and I'll spend my time and ask my questions on some other forum where childish behavior is looked down upon and they would be more happy to have a community of dog lovers than arguing and pointing fingers.

Moreover, I'll be enjoying my time with my dober girl regardless.

I would ask you to read the manifesto, but I suspect you have been around a while and probably haven't or choose not to understand it.
