This is a doberman-specific forum which, obviously, has some very passionate doberman lovers (some of which spend more time, money, and energy than I, a grad student, has spent on school). This forum does have a manifesto - it's stickied at the top of the new member's section - that speaks about how passionate the members here tend to be and what type of breeders they support. If you consider where you are I would find it be hard to be surprised that you're welcome isn't great when you lined a horrible person's pockets for a puppy while her parents still suffer.
I think the same qualities for being an ethical breeder of anything are basically the same. To me,
a breeder is someone who fancies the breed or species and promotes good care, training, socialization, breeding for betterment, etc and someone who actively breeds for more than just once. Anyone else is a BYB, and yes, I feel they are people who should not own the animals or have anything to do with breeding. Had this been a puppy mill, no, I would not have brought her home and had I have been able to bring the parents home, I would have. Further more, nobody has any clue how much I paid to bring her home - and let me assure you, it was hardly padding their pockets. Once again, I reiterate that the male was fixed and they were both for sale. They obviously saw that breeding was not a profitable scheme and moved on. If the parents had been starving, or had I felt they were being actively abused or seriously neglected, I would have filed a complaint. The male was limping on one paw and the girl was a little thin in my opinion. Not something that would exactly raise eyebrows to most. Had I had the ability or the experience required to take a dog like the female in I would have taken them both, unfortunately I don't and there's nothing I could do on the situation. I'm personally glad that I have my dog and she will be raised in a wonderful environment with an owner that adores her.
I am not complaining on the welcome, I am quite frankly flat out saying that if the people of the forum enjoy attacking new members and shoving their viewpoints down others throats, then I won't be participating. It's very good and well to have your opinion on whatever subject, and stating it is also good and well, but not attacking others when said person, in fact, quite basically gave a dog a home when it didn't really have one.
This is why I had always stayed away from specific breed fanicers forums before, even though yes, I have a love of dobies. You can all enjoy your community and I'll spend my time and ask my questions on some other forum where childish behavior is looked down upon and they would be more happy to have a community of dog lovers than arguing and pointing fingers.
Moreover, I'll be enjoying my time with my dober girl regardless.
