| | Lil Pup | Hello everyone! I am a new member to this forum, but have been captivated by it for quite some time. I am a military spouse currently stationed overseas in Japan, with our 2 children and our furry 9 yr old dog, Guinness, who is a 45 lb Shepherd Mix. We used to have a much larger family with Dobermans but our passion was older rescue dogs; they have all since passed away and are at Rainbow Bridge I'm sure
I am looking to add a new member to our family since we are hopelessly lost without a Doberman to snuggle/run/play with. I am interested in a breeder who works to better the Doberman breed and increase their longevity (all of our rescues ended with heartbreaking diseases and shorter lifespan - 5-7 yrs) I am just a novice on the breed, and hope to find a great companion for our family and hobby agility/obedience training
Thank you for your support |

| | Lil Pup | Thanks for the welcomes! We are located at Yokota, outside of Tokyo. We are working on all the import restrictions and paperwork right now to see when we can reasonably expect to get a Dobie here once we find one we like Japan is rabies free if you were wondering, so it's pretty strict to import here. |

| | Lil Pup | There isn't a big market for Dobermans here, so after looking around and talking to some locals (in my limited Japanese), I couldn't find anyone. Now we just moved here in March, so if anyone out there knows different, please let me know. Most people I spoke with don't have dogs and if they did, they bought them at pet stores. Here the pets are suppose to come from reputable breeders, but they are very expensive and culturally I just don't understand getting one like that So I am going to be searching for U.S. breeders through DPCA and the forum. |

| I'm a fan of Harase Garten's dogs. harasegarten Never dealt with the breeder personally (yet) since I'm still a bit away from being ready to bring a dog home but Kansadobe (a reputable breeder in Kansas) has vouched for her many times on this forum. You could also PM Elzajpn and ask her who Elza's breeder is. |

I really appreciate the info and if anyone has information on more Dobies in Japan, especially a rescue or place to find a quality adult Doberman, let me know! If not, I will be looking for a good pup here |

| Hello sarahlot. Welcome to the DT! I received your PM
My breeder, "Dog Land Haru", doesn't have available dobie puppies now.
I've been checking out the rescue dobies this morning for you and found two in Kanto area, I think they're in Kanagawa pref.:
One (black, female) is under the medical treatment. Severe skin damage. So, not ready to go yet.
The other one (red, cropped&docked, female, 1 yr. old) was rescued from the government shelter just a week ago, according to their website. Glad! If it didn't happen, she'd been already gone! Shelters usually keep dogs up to 5-7 days. I saw the pic of this girl and she's beautiful.
I sent them (rescue organization) an inquiry.
Once I receive a reply from them (I hope they'll reply me asap!), I'll PM to you.
I'm very glad and impressed that you're trying to rescue a dog. Rescuing is, as you already know, rare here... Smaller and younger is better, culture

| Still waiting for their reply since they don't list their phone number, but only the email address.
If they concern, I guess, how you'll do with your rescued dobe when you go back to the US in the future. Will you be able to take her with you? I'm pretty sure they'll ask you the same question as they look for a forever home.
The reason why I ask is I've seen the posts by the US soldiers stationed in Japan who tried to take their dogs and asked DT the means. We answered some methods and airline info, but I didn't hear the result. I really hope they departed Japan together.

We actually have one medium shepherd mix female that we brought with us to Japan in March when we moved here. We will be shipping her back the same way, and the military will fly us on a commercial airline when we move again, so we pay a small fee to get the dogs back home (I think about 9,000 yen each).
In the 12 years we have been in the military, we have never had to give a pet up due to relocation. Our dog is 9 yrs old and we have had her since she was a puppy, moving all over the world.
Thanks for all your help. I can definitely use someone who understands Dobermans to speak with the shelter. We need a dog that will do well with our children and other dog, so we have to be somewhat selective in which dog we adopt or buy.
BTW - What city is the rescue located? |

| Importing a dog back to the US is actually easier then getting the dog into Japan, as you may already know with your current dog. The Japanese embargo of importing a dog is the most difficult.. ask the vet on your base, they have loads of literature on it. Also if you do decide to fly a pet unaccompanied, Delta airlines will give you a %60 discount for active duty hopefully your rescue establishment will be willing to work with you through this process. When you PCS back to the states the rotator and military vets should/will take care of the travel arrangements for your pets, the transition will be ALOT smoother. I advise to get a pet passport, I have one for my boy and we're able to move all over Europe with it no problems.
Good luck!

| It's great to know your commitment
I read through the rescue group's website and it says "There may be a case not to reply an individual inquiry, but please apply using our form." Office duties are performed by one person! That's why they don't list their contact numbers or address... It looks their office is in Yokohama.
Upcoming Sunday, 11th, they'll hold the "adoption/rescue" event (11a.m.-2p.m.) in Chigasaki Chuo Koen where is opposite from Chigasaki City Hall. I don't know if they'll bring the red doberman but it's worth going there to talk directly to the person, if your schedule allows you. Oops, from your base to Chigasaki, one way would be 90min. Far away!? I wish I could help you in person. As I live in Sendai 360km north of Tokyo, I can't go.
Is your PC(OS) Japanese language friendly type?
BTW, when you brought your shepherd mix to Japan, how long did you have to wait? A few days or weeks? I've read the article the cat from France spent nearly 6 months in Narita...

If done right, the cat shouldn't have spent more than an hour or so (depending on how busy they are) to go through customs at the airport.
