| Hi from SW Michigan Hey, just a quick intro. I live in SW Michigan and have always wanted a doberman. My wife and I live out in the country with our little 2 yr old boy and we are expecting in March. I am planning on adding a dobe to my household in about a year, after the baby is born. Just doing my research until then looking for breeders and training tips.
Thanks

| Berrien Springs/Eau Claire area. Very cool to see people close to me with Dobermans, I been wanting a Doberman for a while for pet/watch dog for my family and I, and everyone has been telling me to get a German shepherd instead. Dobermans just don't seem very popular anymore. Growing up in the Caribbean my grandparents had 2 Doberman and all I remember is that they were really loyal dogs. Any good trainers around here? |

| Welcome! There are some great breeders in Michigan, if you're going that route.

| I've been here 10 years and never heard of them. Will ask my trainer about them. I train with Lisa Antonini at Stay and Obey in Stevensville.

| I'd be a little bit concerned with bringing a doberman puppy to a home with a young child/newborn. They tend to be very over-the-top puppies. Dober-sharks, dober-teens, and on and on. Have you considered getting an older dog from rescue, even one that's a year or year and a half old will already be very beneficial.
Not to discourage you, just something to think about.
Welcome to the forum, by the way. |

I can't tell you how many times I have been asked what kind of dog Wheeler is, and he's black. I can kind of see it with Lola, not everybody realizes they come in any color other than black, but....???

as far a a puppy goes I am not planning on getting a a dog soon. My wife is expecting our second in March so I was thinking mabe a year to year and a half from there. I was under the impression of having the dog grow up with the kids. Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't bringing an older dog in be a little more stressfull for the dog ie new home new people ect? not out of the question though.
an local breeders that you gu ys know of?? found two in the Paw Paw area but wasn't sure about them. one is called SKY COUNTRY KENNELs and the other is a BYB (i know) but his dogs look very well cared for. |

| The advantage to a slightly older dog is that, theoretically, the dog will know how to properly behave around kids. Puppies are rambunctious and full of energy - they're also clumsy. Putting that with a young child is often not a safe idea.
Sky Country kennels is a BYB. I mean... they breed 6 different breeds of dogs. THere is no way that somebody could be active in all four breeds and breeding reputable. Try the DPCA breeder referral page as a starting point. Not all the breeders on there are great, some poor ones slip onto the list, but it's a good placce to start.

Believe me, I searched and visited and called nearly everybody in this state that breeds Dobermans. Visited several, including at least one of those you mention.
Stay away from craigs list, the news paper, or any of the inet puppy finder sites. In Michigan you have; Gormae (in the Thumb), Lyndobe (Ann Arbor), Mi-Ti, and Mi-Cher (I don't think Cheryl has a website, her daughter is my handler, so I can get you contact info if you need it.).
In Indiana; Windsong (South Bend), Cambria (near Cincinnati)
In Illinios: Bruda, Smack-Dab, Ravenwood
Message me if I can help, I try to keep up with who is doing what in our area and we do have some local breeders that you want to stay away from as well.
