Hi all. I'm new to Dobermans, but no stranger to the AKC and other pure breeds. I wanted to come to this forum to learn about and discuss dobermans. I joined some other Doberman online communities and was not very impressed by how Dobie owners treat the newbies. I'm hoping this place will be a little different.

I have a doberman puppy, black and rust male, and he is by far the smartest dog I've ever had. We got him with Limited AKC papers for pet purposes, not to show or breed. We wanted a dog that would guard, intimidate any intruders, and be a family pet. We wanted a dog to play with, to take places, and just to love and adore in general. We might send him to a training/ obedience school just to have control over him, but he learns so fast and we can see that won't be a problem!

Anyway... just trying to learn for now. Researched for a year before we got a Doberman but still have a whole lot to learn. Also, despite the fact that our dog came from a place I've seen some people speak ill of, we are keeping him and loving him and getting him as much vet care as we would if we paid $3000+ (we actually paid about half that).

Welcome to DT. Enjoy your little guy and we are here to help with any questions you may have. I will say it is strongly discouraged to send a puppy or dog away for training. Generally that's the sign of a scam or the trainer is using methods that he or she may not want you to see. You will learn much much more taking training classes with your puppy and it serves as an excellent bonding experience between the two of you as well as great socialization for him with other dogs and people.

Welcome to DT.

I agree with not sending your pup off for training. I once took a group class with a local trainer who also did board and train. She yelled at, leash checked, then rolled and pinned her demo dog one time, because he broke a down. If she did that in a public class, I shudder to think of what she did in private.

Welcome to DT from Colorado! So glad you came here--lots of info and interesting conversations....and PICTURES! LOL We’d love to see some of your pup.

Not to beat a dead horse, but yeah, sending a doberman away for training is not recommended. One thing I haven’t seen mentioned yet here is that the owner usually needs training too--how to recognize the signals your dog is giving you, when and how it is appropriate to react to his behavior--things like that.

And the bonding experience is so great (that piece did get mentioned above). I used to feel like I was dancing with Kip when he was on-leash and heeling beside me--I could move in any direction, stop suddenly, start running from a stop, tell him to wait or down while I kept walking on...anything...and he was right there beside me in step with everything I did, looking up at me for direction.

Welcome to the forums! Everyone here is very down to earth and we all love dogs, there is no elitism or pretension towards the newbies. Mine isn't even a real Dobe but a half bred mutt and I still feel like part of the pack so to speak! You will find loads of information, and people with years of experience at your finger tips for any question you might have. We are a very visual group so I must ask, when do we get to see the little man?
