Hello everyone! I'm not really new, I've been a lurker for a long time but just decided to take the plunge to make an account.

I am not good at intros so I will try to make this brief (hopefully). I currently live on the IL side of the river but am planning to move over to STL, MO by August. I currently have 3 canines in my pack and I also feed a raw diet to all.

There is Koda, a 55lb male mutt. His mother is half rottweiler half husky, and his father is questionable ? I rescued him at 4 days old.

Minka who is a 67lb mutt as well. Female, rescued her at around 8 months from a family giving her up because her wild behavior and fence jumping. She clears my 6 foot privacy fence in her sleep...we are working on that. Failed foster :p wasn't supposed to keep her but it is looking like I will.

Lastly but not least is Lagertha (named after a legendary female Viking) another mutt I am currently fostering. Took her in when she was pregnant, (no one knew, hell of a surprise) and all her pups have just found homes.

Whew, so much for keeping this short eh? I have always wanted a doberman since I was a child, a family member had one and it was the most stoic beautiful creature I ever seen. As I got older the feeling never went away but "wanting" something does not always mean you are ready for it.

I have been falling in love with show dogs over the last few years and have some interest in possibly getting a dog to show. Also IPO is another Avenue I might pursue. Growing up, a family friend is a breeder of Cane Corsos and almost all his dogs were trained in protection (some did not make the cut and were sold to regular families). He sold pups to the police, and other agencies, I think growing up around him helped me learn standards for dogs and how BYBs are detrimental for the breeds. I get called a dog snob often, even though all I have are mutts haha

I'm not sure what else to mention here. I'm currently thinking of buying a house soon and after that I will see about combing through breeders for one I might like to purchase a show quality pup from. I have to visit more doberman confirmation shows however (4 hours away in MO) to make sure I am ready for that commitment and find a style I like. I work with a few rescues in the area "unofficially", as in I know people who foster dogs with them and if it is a dog that they can't handle they actually send them to me to rehabilitate before they can be adopted out or seen by potential families.

Haha sorry for the book, if you have any questions feel free to ask away ^_^

Welcome! My rescue group are all dog snobs and most of them have rescue Dobes or mutts! We all wish we didn't have this rescue hobby and if all breeders were conscious breeders, well we wouldn't.

I'm Trying to think what breeders were recommended to me as I also want to show and do IPO.
Catawba
Cinematic
Makayla Christianson but I can't remember her kennel name
Von Luka (who is the best and I'm not biased bc I have a puppy :grin2: she is also Workingk9 on here)
Doug and Jackie Matson

The list goes on but my mind doesn't lol.

As I'm sure you're aware check health testing and I like to see at least a 4 gen pedigree but preferably a 7 and what health issues they had and how they died at what age.

Good luck show dog snob ;)

Thank you for the welcome! ^_^

I'm still about 6 months to a year before fully committing to the breeder search but I'll definitely have to keep those names in mind. I keep hearing that I might only be able to find a show dog or a working dog but I won't get both in one canine (mainly from my GSD owning friends) but I'm hoping to be able to do both (if I get a dobe that has an affinity for IPO) show and work.

I know all about health testing, mainly for sad reasons. Growing up with the family friend's kennel and dogs, its mainly all about HIPS HIPS HIPS :( I've seen gorgeous dogs succumb to the worse things that could have been avoided by better breeding / testing. The kennel would take in poorly bred dogs from BYBs and spay/neuter them and show them as examples to prospective buyers why it is worth it to pay for quality and as an example of what the standard is not. [In the Cane Corso BYB community apparently CCs are bred with American Pit Bull Terriers and still passed off as CCs ; so many dogs advertised as CCs with terrier markings on their face and bad form]

On a happier note I am excited about nationals as I am actually from Chicago and moved south to STL for my career. I joined the local DPCA group on facebook a bit ago but I have not actually been to any outings or meetings. I'm excited to go though, the next event is not for a while though :( I just missed an event they had and the next one isn't for a month or so I believe. So excited to begin this journey :D

I do not have a Doberman and rarely post but love this forum because of all the fantastic information. I would love to get a Dobe eventually, should my circumstances permit it.

Because of this forum, I know that SSA (Same Sex Aggression) is an issue not to be taken lightly. If you haven't already, I suggest you do a forum search and read all about it. Show bred or working bred may be the least of your worries.

Good luck with your search. :)

Thanks! Between here and another doberman forum I can't get enough information over the years.

And being in rescue work since before I was 18 and growing up around a kennel I can tell you a lot about SSA. Some horror stories, some good ones, some crate and rotation routines, and show you some scars from breaking up bitches (who I'm my opinion tend to have SSA more than males from my experience). Trust me, it is not a concern, not because I am naive but because I am knowledgeable.

I still do not know what gender of doberman I'm thinking of getting and I plan to continue to foster. Again as I previously stated, I'm still several months if not a year+ off from getting a dobie. I'm entirely too undecided about showing at this time and I don't want to get "paws on the ground" before I'm solid about what I will do lifestyle wise. Will the dog be just a companion? Will it be a show dog or IPO? Will it have the drive to just be a working dog?(My significant other owns 400+ acres about 40 mins north of STL and we frequently use the dogs on the property)

There is a lot to consider. I've bounced the thought around for years and each time I've decided to give it more time. I'm getting more and more ready but still not quite there yet, thanks for the input though.

Masaya Dobermans? Never heard of them before.

***

After some google time those dogs look like WORKING dogs! :2surprise: I love me some dogs with drive! Might have to keep them in mind as well! Thanks for the suggestion :D

We are almost positive that our next dobe will come from Doug and Jacque Matson from Kansa Dobes. Definitely worth looking at.
I've been hearing quite a bit about Kansa Dobes recently. I've been browsing their page recently ogling some of their dogs, definitely like the look of them ^_^

Thanks for the suggestions!

Hi from STL- can't believed I missed this thread!
There is a pretty decent group of dobe people in this area- I would also suggest checking out the all-breed shows out at the Purina Farms event center. You can see what style dog you like and meet with breeders and handlers out there. That is how I eventually found my breeder.
