| New to the breed of Dobermans Hello everyone. My name is Missy and my boyfriend is Wes. Wes is currently doing some research, as I am too on the Doberman Pincher. That is the dog he has wanted since he was a little kid. I personally do not know much about them, but are willing to learn as much as possible. We will not be looking to bring a Doberman into our lives for about 2-3 years which will give plenty of time for research.
I am owned by boxers, I have been actively involved with the boxer breed for over 5 years. Though I have been around them for about 20+ years. I do show my boxer in obedience/rally/and agility. Wes will do the same with his Doberman.
We are very green when it comes to his beautiful breed. The trainer that I work with does have Doberman, and she's been willing to help.
I can't wait to meet other Dobie people and learn as much as possible. |

Originally I imagined the breeds would be very similar. I am not sure why I thought that. It must have been derived from body type, class of dog, nation of origin. I don't know. I just know this: I was wrong. They aren't very similar at all.
Here's my take:
The boxer is a more playful, entertaining, silly, life-of-the-party breed. I truly believe that with the boxer, everything is about you the owner. How can the dog please you, how can he/she make you laugh or smile. Here's an example: one day Rocco was 1 year old. I was going through a very difficult phase. I was sitting with him alone on a rock in the woods. I wasn't very happy, and it was obvious. He decided to dig a hole, bury his head in it, and cover it up with dirt. Then at an opportune moment, he abruptly thrust his head out of the hole, spraying dirt everywhere. I smiled. He did it again. I laughed. He came over and sat next to me. He did his self-assigned job. Here's another way to express it: I feel the boxer has a very high "EQ" (emotional intelligence).
The Doberman is more intense, deliberate, engaged. The breed is more serious -- not in a scary or boring way, but in a way that requires you to be an active participant in its life. There's no "auto pilot" with this breed. They are engaged in everything they do, and expect the same of you. If we are in the woods and I am texting someone, she will let me know she disapproves of my lack of attention. She will get frustrated that I am not fully commited to our shared activity. Life with her is more about the dog than me (whereas it was just the opposite with Rocco). But it's also a beautiful distraction, just being able to watch her move and see her mind work. You can almost feel that you are witnessing human-like problem solving when the Doberman finds a task that interests it.
Both breeds are remarkable physical specimens. And both find a way to amaze you. They just seem, to me anyway, to go about it differently. I firmly believe the boxer says: I'll do anything I can to make you smile! The Doberman says: Anything I do is sure to make you smile! They are both wonderful breeds, wonderful companions. And both make a wonderful addition to commited owner's life. |
