| | Lil Pup | New and Looking for Help Hi, I've never posted on here but I have been a member for a while and lurked around. I have been interested in Dobermans for a few years now and have been doing some research. I am currently 16 years old. I am located in SC. I am not ready to add a Doberman to my family but I am constantly wanting to learn more and become more experienced. So basically I was just wondering if there is anyone that could maybe take me under their wing, maybe offer me some guidance. Feel free to PM me if you would rather contact me that way to talk. Thank you so much for any help

| Hi Tori, and welcome from San Diego. Spend lots of time reading through old threads in all the different subjects of the forum - you'll learn an awful lot. I don't think you should rely on 1 or 2 mentors, because you might limit yourself to their viewpoints, when there are dozens of really knowledgeable and VERY experienced people here. Just read and listen and ask questions - you'll be amazed. Just don't get a dog until you are in a position to be very dependable, stable, and devote a whole lot of time to him or her - Dobes are very smart, and very social, and won't do well if left alone a lot. They can be very jealous of your social life, unless they are part of it! : ) lois |

| Hi Tori and welcome! You will find some great information here. A word of caution though, this is a public forum and you never know who could be reading this. A mentor is a great way to learn a lot about dobermans, but this is probably not the best place to advertise that. If you go to a local show you could meet a great experienced dobe person so maybe that is a better way to find what you are looking for. |

| | Lil Pup | Thanks guys I have been to several shows and actually am going to one this weekend that I attend twice a year. I know I should approach breeders and exhibitors, but I'm very shy and afraid I'll be a bother to them I guess. I know I'll need to get over that if I want to make any real strides though. I have been surfing through posts, I guess I just don't really know what to ask though lol Strange, I know. Well again, thanks for your help and maybe I will meet someone.

| clipclop - that's a great idea. when i was a teen, i voluteered at the Humane Society for a few years, and learned an awful lot!
And Tori, just go up to the owners or handlers at a show, and compliment the dogs - it's a great opener, makes them proud and happy, and then opens the door for a conversation. They won't mind - everyone LOVES talking about their dogs, especially to an interested listener!! |

| | Lil Pup | Okay, one more thing. Sorry lol But what forum(s) do you suggest I visit to get the most information? And what types of questions to ask? I just don't want to take over a post or anything by asking questions. Thanks! |

| | Alpha | Welcome - You've come to the right place. Doberman Talk is wonderful and full of people who combined know everything there is to know about Dobes!
Just start a new thread in the forum you think it might fit, i.e. Health if about testing or illness, or puppies if about house training. Just do your best. IMO, it's better to start in the wrong place than take over someone's thread, the moderators can always move it to the right place for you.
