| | Big Pup | Hey from Ohio Hey y'all. I stumbled on this site looking around the internet for as much Doberman information as I could find! This site is really informative with all the threads, it's been keeping my busy just reading.
Anyway, a little about me. I'm 23(as of yesterday) and I'm an aspiring real estate agent in Ohio. I'm currently living in a situation where I can't own a dog. And I've never even owned one in my entire life(my parents hate dogs and in college it just wasn't possible to give a dog the attention and love it needs while still balancing school, social life, and relationships) So now I'm looking to purchase a new house (hopefully with a decent sized fenced in back yard) and hopefully a new companion.
I've been looking around for a dog that fits what I'm looking for and I think the Doberman seems to be really close. I want a dog that is energetic, very loyal, loves to have fun but knows when its time to be serious, protector of the house, very smart and trainable, all of which seem to be some of the best attributes of a Doberman.
I've looked around at some rescue sites and found the cutest little 19 month girl, but I really want to get a puppy that I can form a bond with from 8-10 weeks on. Does anyone have a feeling about this connection that it may differ from a dog that is yours from puppyhood, rather than 2 or 3 years?
I prefer the Black and Tan, but I know that's just a preference. Anyway, I'm just really excited to start a new chapter in my life and really want to get a dog and loyal companion to share it with(they seem much less moody and high strung than a woman, no offense ladies )!

| Hello and welcome from another Ohioan So glad you found the forum, there is a multitude of great info to be found here!
As a rescuer and owner of both feline and K9 companions, I have to say, you DO bond wonderfully to older rescues! With some cases, even more so then with a pup, IMO, I feel they genuinely appreciate being given a chance. And 19 months is still very young!! I'd recommend giving her a chance!
Plus there is the upside to skipping all the puppy crap, literally and figuratively speaking |

| Hi Cosmo - really?... and an aspiring RE agent - you picked a great time to buy - hope you're a success at selling, too! Well, best of luck - hope you're not as completely nuts as the original Kramer!! LOL!!
You will definitely get your props from a rescue - they are so appreciative - Dobermans are SO smart, and they really do know when someone has saved their lives - you'll be amazed by the bond. My main concern would be that you'll be away from home many hours a day, and any Doberman needs lots of your time. They need lots of activity for their body - and their brain!
Good luck in your search. Keep us posted. Lois |

| | Big Pup | The nice thing about the Broker I'm working for, there are no set hours I have to be in the office and he is perfectly fine with working out of my house. I can log into all the computer databases, etc. from home, that I can from work so that's why I think it will work out.
I'm leaning more towards a rescue but I'll just have to tell them that I'm not looking for a severe case, just someone that is moving or getting a new baby or something (I don't even know if these are very common) and doesn't have too many behavioral problems. Without ever having a dog of my own, I don't know how qualified I would be taking in a Doberman that needs a true saint to take care of him/her.
So I'll keep reading, learning, hopefully find a house and get my dream Doberman! |

| That happens alot ...dogs needing rehomed that end up in rescue due to moving, kids, doesn't match the furniture any more, etc.. So you shouldn't have any trouble finding a great kid for yourself!
Good luck! |

| Hi and welcome from AZ. Good for you for getting in the game of RE. I wish you tons of luck!!! All I can say for getting a Doberman as your first dog is make sure you take it to obedience school. They are all the things you said in your first post, but can be a handful if not trained. |

| Welcome to DT,
The place to be.
You'll have some fun and learn a lot,
About this bug you now have caught.
They're smart and full of life and love,
Fit closer to you than a glove!
Hmm, I need more coffee... Anyhow, welcome and enjoy all the info here, ask a zillion questions and definately think about that little rescue girl. As lolonurse said, they know when someone has saved them and as long as you make the time for training your bond will be just as strong as tho you had one from puppyhood without the heavy duty puppy terrors! It would be so nice...
