| Is this where I sign in for my Noobie t-shirt and doberman key chain?
I'm going to be new to the Doberman mid way through August. I was referred here by a a member of a different board, WOOF! A BOSTON TERRIER BOARD which is a Boston Terrier site I joined a while back to do some research for my mom.
I'm a Kent State University Senior a year and a half behind. (Thank you transfer) I'll be graduating in December with a B.A in Political Science. My initial plan was law school, law school, law school. However upon further review I've decided Law School is the last place I want to be, I like my hair and don't want it falling out from the ridiculous stress load. Ideally I want to be a lobbyist and law school isn't a necessity to achieve said goal.
I currently don't have a dog to call my own but have been raised with one since age 2. My families first dog was a Cocker Spaniel named Humphrey. He and I didn't get along and honestly I don't remember much about his youth but rather his Capt. Grumpy days.
I was 7 when we got what I consider my "first dog" because I was old enough to appreciate him. My Great Aunt found him in her garden and initially thought he was a groundhog. As in turns out he was a brindle American Staffordshire Terrier (Rocky) that would immediately become my best friend. He lived to be 17 and putting him to sleep was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. My parents got our second when Rocky was around 7, (Adrian) and she's still alive and very well. After Rocky's passing my parents sought another Male Amstaff which is when they adopted Conan from the Pittsburgh Humane Society. He's now 1 1/2 and an absolute trip.
However with Adrian getting a little older Conan has become a little much in the play department so my parents once again sought out another dog but one of the smaller, big attitude variety. The end result was a 3 month old Boston Terrier who now answers to Diego. He and Conan are best friends and Adrian when the spirit moves her gets involved as well.
Sooooooooooooooooo a very good friend of mine is getting out of the breeding game and has had one final litter of Doberman's. I love the parents so I want one of the puppies. They are currently 20 days old and will be ready for adoption between 8-10 weeks. I have "working dog" experience with the high drive, eager to please Amstaff so I'm not at all worried about bringing up a Doberman. I'll be 26 in September and this is my first dog on my own. He's going to become the running/jogging partner of my gf and I (Very serious GF, eventual fiance so we won't have a dog in limbo)
I'm also going to look in to fly ball or some sort of agility training. I can't wait. I'm here for information, it seems like a great place with a lot of expertise so be ready for at least a few additional posts in the next few hours and plenty more as time wears on.... I'm done now. : ) |

| Welcome from San Diego. You are going to have SO much fun!
Hey - you could become an animal lawyer, and make a gazillion dollars in like Beverly Hills and Manhattan and West Palm Beach - or even in Shaker Heights! Then you could also be an animal rights lobbyist! : ) well, just a thought from a treehugging, greenpeace supporting old idealist. Lois |

However that won't likely occur until I'm already established. I won't lobby for anything I disagree with or consider morally wrong, predominantly the tobacco companies. I'd love to build up a war chest if you will and just go at animal cruelty legislation full steam. My family has only ever adopted. All of our Amstaffs are from a shelter or the humane society and my parents Boston Terrier was rescued from a family that could no longer keep him so I have strong ties to the rescue front. I've actually met a few attorneys through the adoption process, one actually offered me a job upon graduation. She actually started a rescue organziation in Ohio called "Rainbow Connections" but it deals specifically with cats. (Both of my cats were adopted from there)
I'm definitely a "yellow dog" democrat and will continue my activist ways well in to retirement, assuming I ever retire.
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.
The Doberman will be my first breeder endeavor. |
