Prong or E-collar

I was wondering if you guys could help me out.

As you guys (may) know (or not), my girl goes everywhere with me. She behaves extremely well at work and at most places (sits, stays, lays down, shakes, etc). Except when we're at the beach (and she sees seagulls. "oooooh, seaguls...must...chase...they're crazy to not want to play with me. Otherwise, she minds relatively well) or down feeding the horses (she likes to run around, knip at their heels, bite their tails, eat poop).

I know that she's learned to have selective hearing and still doesn't recognize her name. Should I just give in an buy an electric collar and save the prongs for the beach?

(additional info - I just picked up leerburg's basic obedience dvd)

IMO...E-collars should only be used after all other methods have been exhausted, and certainly are NOT for all dogs. That being said....I am using one on my 17 month old high drive Euro boy, for one command only....COME and only while off lead in rural areas. I tried unsuccessfully for a year to get 100% recall from my boy....no matter what the distraction, he was still blowing me off occasionally, and at his size and strength, I could no longer chance it, so the collar was strapped on. I've only had to nick him a couple of times in the last 6 weeks....he comes immediately when called. It is like an extension to his leash. Our hikes have new joy....because I no longer worry about Petey coming when called.

I know about seagull chasing. Mine would chase them into the water and swim after them. One Autumn I nearly had to go in after him. But we got through it with a long line, a prong, and a ton of patience. I have to agree with the others only try the e-collar as a last resort.
