Training NonFood motivated Dogs

Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have any suggestions for training the down not using food or compulsion? I am working with a rescued female who has a beautiful sit but refuses to down. I have already tried changing treats and swapping treats for toys. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

What kind of treats? Usually they cant resist hotdogs or cheese sticks.

I haven't been working with her very long. Just about 1 1/2 months. You're right it could be a trust issue.

also maybe try giving her a little less breakfast. that way she is more motivated to eat the hotdogs your offering her.

Try skipping a meal all together. You will have her full attention afterwards (with the treats)

You could also try capturing the "down". Reward her when you see her voluntarily lie down and name the command.

Building up her confidence should help to train her. Maybe try working on something easier to teach that is less submissive. Like the heel, dogs learn very quickly using the 90 and 180 turning method. Or just a simple stay command. Anything really besides the down.

Down puts the dog in such a vulnerable position that she probably isn't confident or comfortable enough right now. Also to get her to down, you could try getting on your knees and gently slip out one foot from under her, give the down command, rewarding for each lower movement.

I had a really hard time getting my fearful, stubborn girl to do a down and that is how I taught her.

Whatever you do, don't get frustrated. Keep sessions short and be positive! Good Luck!!
