Introducing our new challenge Caisson..... Advice is greatly appreciated!

We decided to add a dobe to our family, after months of research and education we decided a dobe was it! So we started looking around and found some breeders in our state, definitely not near our location but we were willing to travel if we found the right puppy. After several months it seemed like we weren't getting anywhere so we decided to start looking into rescues and adoption centers. We found a couple and had hoped to adopt one but he was adopted out to another home. Alas long story short we meet Caisson... A gorgeous 15 month old Blue / Tan neutered cropped and docked registered male. We met with the Caisson and loved his temperament, asked all of our hundreds of questions, saw all his vet paperwork, we played with him, touched him all over watched him interact, etc. Well we decided Caisson should join our family, now the fun part.

Caisson has apparently had very minimal training, basically we got sit and down for about 2 seconds and we're done... He doesn't respond to his name, absolutely no boundaries, has no leash experience, very pushy with our other 2 dogs, and certainly doesn't know he is 85lbs... Yeah he's a big boy! But nonetheless we are willing to work with him. He has been ok thus far with our other 2 dogs, he is a bit pushy and has been nipped at by my male and female. He just gets to pushy with smelling them ALL over and then towers over them (doubting its a dominance thing he is just really that much taller). We have resolved the leash issue he responds extremely well to the Easy Walk. But the thing that baffles me the most is he has no idea his name is Caisson (according to the owners this has been his name the entire time) We do crate him at night, he has no food aggression, he and my female rotate rawhides. He is very insecure though, shows a lot of anxiety, I am assuming this is from being taken from what he knows to a new strange environment and hoping this will slowly ease as he settles in. He will settle down and then a few moments later he goes back to pacing and whining, even after a potty break. We have found he is EXTREMELY food motivated but has a very hard time focusing.... He just gets to excited and cannot sit still any longer... I am thinking with a lot of slow patient work we can get him over this. I am more concerned about his lack of boundaries with my other 2 dogs, he hasn't shown any aggression towards them, he desperately wants to play, but his size intimidates my female (my male is 8 years old and very much so out of the play games, he prefers his recliner). I am hoping someone knows of some training techniques to help ease his transition and set some boundaries and manners. I am familiar with the clicker technique and plane to try this method. But if someone knows a tip or secret any advice would be extremely appreciated!

i'd start with the absolute basics. treat him like he's a puppy who doesn't know anything...because it sounds like he really doesn't, short of sit/down/crating. i'm glad you're giving him a chance.

You have two males?

If you want to keep him, prepare to crate & rotate.

Say his name and when he looks at you treat him. Repeat repeat repeat everytime he looks at you when you say his name. Start every command with his name and treat when he looks at you .

Both males are neutered, I am familiar with male / male aggression. Duece my border was used as a rehab dog in clinics. We have been crating and rotating and they are never left unsupervised. There have been no signs of aggression but we are not leaving anything to chance.

Is it possible to have to altered males co-exist or is that a impossibility with Dobermans?

It's possible but not the norm at all unfortunately. Doesn't matter often if they are neutered or not. He's young enough it might not show up for a few months to a year IF it shows up.

To teach a dog their name I use a similar method as above but in the beginning I don't wait for them to respond. Stand right next to them with 5-6 treats. Name treat name treat name treat, etc. until done. I do this about 3 times a day for 2-3 days. Pretty soon when you say the name you will see a head turn, at that point they are getting it and then I wait for the head turn to give the treat. I make it very easy to start.

I have Bacchus who is a 5 year old intact male and Yogi an elderly neutered male lhasa apso. Life is smooth. I made it clear early on there would be no fight, no bite. There is the rare spat but no blood or guts just noise and spit. Bacchus is definitely the boss.

I am hoping to be able to have them co-exist I would hate to have to rehome Caisson. Now the one time he pushed a bit to much Duece did nip and Caisson backed off, but he is such a toddler! He comes right back 10 minutes later sniffing, nudging, and being all pushy again. And of course with no training comes the challenge of finding a way to get him to stop without scaring the crud out of him... He's very jumpy whenever we move or get up he is right there up and watching every move we make. He is attempting to play with the female and she is curious about playing back but again his size is a factor... He honestly thinks he weighs 5 lbs....

He is a beauty! Congrats on the new guy and thanks for rescuing. I am speaking for what worked for me when I got my 3 yr old rescue boy who knew NOTHING! I started training and socialization immediately with him. He is extremely sensitive and was very anxious, so I found once he learned that "good boy" and a pat on the head is a good thing, training was a breeze...he craved those positive affirmations from me. We started with basic obedience which really boosted his confidence! We then moved on to another "job" (agility), and that has helped even more. We are going on 8 months since he came to us, and he almost acts like a normal dog :-)

I don't know how long you've has Caisson, but time and patience is key with some of these rescues. You never know how they were treated, trained, and handled before.

Keep repeating his name any chance you get when interacting with him. And as for male/male aggression, my dobie and Boston are both neutered males and they get along great! However, they are both extremely laid back dogs, and I was very cautious at first...they were only together under strict supervision.

Good luck, I'm sure things will be fine once the new guy settles in and learns the rules of the house. I look forward to hearing updates on his progress!

Teaching his name probably won't be as bad. You have the "food drive" card you can play. As long as you have the food drive, you can teach him anything. Call the name and feed when he looks/responds. He will learn it very quickly. Consistency will be the key.

As far as towering over the other dogs, my dog still does that to my 10lbs bichon. She used to lay on the bichon, but I am glad she just gave up on that.

I remember seeing similar threads in the forum. You might want to go over few of them to save some time.

Good luck.

I did the 5000 (yes, five thousand) treats thing with my bitch Enid when I changed her name. Every day 50 treats - it was her puppy kibble at the time before I switched her to raw food and for breakfast, every piece was said with her name at various pitches and levels of loudness and slightly different pronunciations and emphasis varying on the syllables. I measured out how many to a cup and then how many cups to a 1/2 gallon jar which meant 6 1/4 gallon jars of treats - I actually only made it to about 4000 treats I think. It was rapid fire treating just with her name.

Now she loves her name and will get within sight of me whenever I call her name (which is handy in the forest and on hikes since she is an explorer).

Well I wish I had good news to report, after much progress with Caisson over the last few days we received a call from his previous parents on New Years.... They weren't coping well with adopting him out and wanted him returned to their home. So I am really hoping we made the right decision though devastated as we were already attached to the big goober we returned him to his former parents...... This is absolutely horrible first we are pushed out of an adoption due to the travel time (the other adopters made it up to the shelter just before we did), now successfully adopting Caisson only to get attached to him and then have to return him to his former owners.... I just don't understand

They had been fostering him for several months, and they gave us this big sob story of how their daughters were devastated over him being gone. I was to upset to go and return him so my BF went alone, he said the girls could have cared less he was back but the husband was thrilled. I just don't understand if they knew they were that attached to him why put him up for adoption only to demand he be returned??? I am starting to give up on owning a Doberman. We tried to do the right thing and only ended up heart broken each time.

We did get the fee back, we have checked into the nearest breed rescue but they require a completely fenced dog yard, which is still a work in progress for us. So we are disqualified as adopters for them as of right now.

I just want to suggest that I was GIVEN a double dog run - "take it down and take it away please!" were the instructions I was given. I wonder if there aren't more like that on Craigslist...? All you need is time and a truck. That should be satisfactory for the enclosed area requirement - I am sure the dog will be living in the house (like all dobes do) and then he would have a place to be loose to do his business. We did build a roof for it using old wood and some spare metal roofing.

I use the dog run we got for the roosters we raise. It has only had 2 dogs in it - a stray Lab intact male for a few hours and Daria for a couple of hours when we first got her and had to go out for a bit. Currently it provides the only dry dirt in the chicken yard for the hens to dust themselves in.
