| I'm not a pro, but positive reinforcement training with verbal praise works the best for us. I have tried clickers and treat, but it wasn't as effective as I wanted.
We have a 15yo Maltipoo who was formerly a backyard dog and he has reformed into a very compliant boy, a 2 year old Yorkie, and our Doberteen Lukas.
The key to any training is to understand the methodology and assessing how well it's working for you and your dog.

| We use treat and reward. We couldn't do the clicker because her highness is scared of it |

| I love [positve reenforcement training for all dogs, nearly every breed of dog I've ever met responds well to it. The key is patience and consistancy.

| I want to know who chose "correction" as their only mode of training...
I actually use all of the above. The clicker with lots of praise and or treats. A jute for rewarding works wonders too I've found. Gunner is very attentive to both but with treats it's either got to be an empty belly or a high value tidbit. His jute on the other hand is like a magic wand.
Some things like lunging can be best halted with a sharp correction on the collar.

| I was wondering for those of you who use treats, what is your reinforcement schedule or do you consistently reward with treats? And do you phase out or continue with the schedule for the lifetime of the dog?
I am asking because I currently use lots of verbal praise and limited leash corrections, but I'd like to incorporate treats using a variable ratio to make it more fun for Lukas. He doesn't really look like he is having too much fun during training so I am hoping using occasional treats will help motivate him more. |

Use the treats consistantly until the behavior is solid, then reduce frequency and value of the treats until you become a 'slot machine' giving only occasionally.

| I use treats at first just to get leroys full attention then after a few tricks i wing him off the treats...this has worked very well for me so far

| I train with a clicker (or a verbal marker if preferred) and treats, with minimal corrections. I prefer luring, shaping and capturing to correcting when it's possible. This is how I plan to train our puppy as well.

| Hi Everyone,
I think it really depends upon the dog what training methods you use. My Brie had the nasty not to mention dangerous habit of trying to chase cars. The only thing that worked was a sharp well-timed correction with a prong collar. She is a very dominant female. With her I cannot afford to ignore poor behavior. I do use praise and treats for basic obedience.
With my male Boris, I use praise and high value treats. He is not very food motivated, and absolutely petrified of the clicker. He will try and leave the room if he sees or hears it. He's a very different dog. I would never dream of using a prong collar on him. He would shut down. |

| Definately (sp?) slowly phase out the treats. The ultimate goal is to have the dog work for the verbal praise. Treats are just an intermediate step to shape the behavior. |
