| Amy's 1st video - controlled off-leash, walking city streets: Inspired by this video, of 16 trained off-leash dogs following it's bike riding leader: YouTube - Taking 16 dogs for a walk freerunning sleddogs - YouTube
So we have captured, my Amy...on a 1-1 harmony, with its DaDa:
My dear friend got a new camcorder and was over on Saturday to pickup a few kibble bags, of dog food...from me. We took a short walk & filmed it, nothing fancy...left his tripod, in the truck.
And since our Amy just turned 11 y/o on Dec. 19th (year 2000 baby)...I wanted a keepsake video.
This was our 1st video, and man was it cold...that day...from new snowfall. YouTube - Dobe Amy controlled off-leash, walking city streets Dobe Amy controlled off-leash, walking city streets..wmv - YouTube
Amy and I have been street walking together (off-leash), like in the video...since she was 4.5 months old.
I've used street & traffic distractions to puppy train her...and she listens to me completely, as I keep her safe & out of harms way...with my voice, body language & loving praise.
This weeks Birth-Day girl !!

| Audrey1 & Darkeys...ThkU for your best wishes / +4 years would be sweet.
- my original goal was 12 y/o or 25%, from this puppy...since my first dobe passed, full of tumors at 9.5
- so we feel good & got much smarter on pet nutrition
Yea Darkevs - ME BAD...sleeping on the camera:
From Monday's B-D shots - sardine suppy / good to the last lick...LOL: Kong Snake Stuffy - one of Amy's favorite toys...and son's little dog Trevor - loves it to (has 3 squeakers):
[Mr. "T-Man" will drag it up our stairs...and hide it on the master bed (from Amy) / 3 times longer, than him]

| She is really a beautiful mature Doberwoman! Happy Birthday Lovely Lady! She gets pretty far ahead of you at times so I also would be too frightened of the traffic if for some reason she took a notion to chase something. |

Originally Posted by HerMewMew Amy is a good girl! I loved the younger days photos! I had unreal fun with this pup (11 years ago) and we are literally joined (for life), she is my heart-dog.
Once I built up her confidence (through game play), she looked at me with total eye focus, and longed for my communicated voice & touch.
Then I decided, she was ready to be put in some situations that had real life distractions, that I could control...so she never felt, the stress or present danger.
If I saw a loose dog (very rare), while I am at a distance from her, I would put out a loud sit/stay, and stand with her.
We have to use the sit/stay if walking directly on the road (off-leash), where no sidewalks exist, and if a car is coming...I just make her stay put, from a distance.
*************************
Our backyard Chippy, I tamed to take nuts, right out of my fingers, two summers ago:
(I also have a pair of bluejays and can get them to the feeder, by letting out a loud whistle)
All of Amy's stuffed animals are referred to "as her babies".
When I trained her to respect wild animals in the yard, I also tell Amy they are "her babies".
She makes the connection, to watch but ignore.
When AMY was young, we had a baby bunny in our back yard at night.
When we saw the baby, eating grass at night, I put Amy in a sit/stay and told her "it was one of her babies, from the animal kingdom"...while we watched it together.
I whispered much love and stroked Amy, for being very good (while 10-15 feet away)...for giving a wild animal, a safe feeding spot. Amy was also trained to ignore squirrels, on our property.
3 years ago, I put a bird seeder in our backyard, and I sometimes take Amy with me when I replenish it.
I tell Amy, her wild babies have to eat to...and she listens to my voice and I tell her how good she is.
Amy is so calm around other creatures, that she can walk close by the bird feeder, and the love birds, are use to her and not afraid...some doesn't even fly off.
Once, the chipmunk ran past Amy (laying on the driveway) and it was within a few feet of her, to get into our backyard (for peanuts, from Dad) and Amy could care less (she didn't even move, a whisker).
NOW - if we see a stray cat in our yard, I will sic Amy on it...lol.
Running full out, around the side of the house (barking with hackles up)...Amy will stop, inches from the roadway (and we live on a dead end street).
She will never put her paws on pavement, unless I direct her to.
Amy and "her baby" Edward Bear stuffy...named after the Ontario, Canada band...from the early 1970's:

| I love Amy's first video!! I pressed the snowflake button to watch it with snowflakes falling I think you have done a fabulous job training her to be calm and sit/stay/follow your commands with cars zooming by. She also did great when the person walked past. Loved the car that turned the corner with the dog hanging out of the window, lol. I thought it was cool when she ran perfectly in a diagonal when you pointed across the street. |

| mmctaq - it would of been our honor & pleasure for me & girl, to have meet Reuben (Amy's real brother).
- amazing how litter mates, can be so much the same...through their life
************ Toby'shuman - "sweetheart" sandy2233 - "old woman" triciakoontz - "mature Doberwoman" ^^^^^^^^^ I love them all (ThkU) and one more "given-name" I say to Amy:
- regularly is "A NO GOOD GIRLY"...lol
I have said this, seems like forever...almost a double negative.
(so she only hears the good parts...lol...and takes it as a complement)
Now my question (I need help with, understanding):
[sorry if my raw age estimates, are somewhat off...just looking for true dobe years, in human terms]
- very small dogs live to +15 years
- small to medium dogs live to +12 years
- medium dogs live to +10 years
- large dogs -10 years
- extra large dogs live to -8 years
So...dog life is not a linear formula, and has very much to do with breed size and weight: For a dobe...is their a correlation to what a 11 y/o would be in human years ??
This "doberman dog age" accuracy in human years, has always interested me.

- From the video master...I am glad you liked our short production clip (thanks).
I found it very rewarding to capture, Amy's senior moments.
- The passerby stranger was a non-issue...as is usually the case...when we are out in public.
I told him from a distance, that Amy was a certified therapy dog (for local hospital & nursing home visits).
- Yea - I did a quick double take too...when Amy and I was at the corner of the intersection.
That white dog (Poodle ?), was sure hanging out the drivers Van window.
I was thinking, did I just see...what I thought I saw...lol.
We are also guilty with the little dogs, we frequently babysit.
Our son said he had his little Trevor and his sister, on his lap (while driving) and got pulled over by the police recently. He got a warning, instead of a fine ($)...the cop, did laugh (a little)...He-He.
I took this photo, last year, of Trevor (aka Mr. T):
- so I can relate, but the white dog (in the video), wasn't so little / and hanging out the open window

| I've posted this issue elsewhere but I repost the relevent points and add any additional stuff here to keep the thread consistant. I apologise for the duplication.
I have a 12 month old Doberboy. I've had him from a 10 week pup. He's been to treat based puppy training, and that generally seemed to work.
I had been letting him off the lead and working on off lead recall with treats with some success. However he started to range and ignore recall if there was something he wanted to look/sniff.
Then a few days ago he ran off and refused to come for about 30 mins or so. He was having a great time, running in big circles, chasing birds. I turned to walk home and he came to see what I was doing but stayed out of arms reach. I waited for him at the entrance to the fields. Eventually he came back.
He has not been off the lease since. I've gone back to on lead recall training with him, treat and praise based.
Any hints/advise would be most welcome.
I'd like to be able to go back to off leash walk as soon as possible but I need to be reasonably confident with his recall first.
I'd rather not use an e-collar or prongs if I can help it.
Thanks in advance. |

| Amy looks like a real sweet girl, and I hope you have many more years with her.
I think there are some Dobermans that you can totally teach to be off lead. And then there are others that unless they are under constant command this would not be possible.
I think it's wonderful you know have a video of her and you that you can always cherish. |

| Sorry, I didn't see the additional posts...in the last 3 days. Biking Bear - I will answer your question, probably tomorrow...Thks. for posting. KissNme & Okie-dobie - it was such a cold day, when we did the video...but Amy was a trooper.
ThkU for the nice words, its funny how capturing her one moment in time...will always be dear to my heart, for years to come.
- I didn't get my Canon G3 digital camera, till she was 1 year old...so her puppy photos, are only on a few rolls of 35mm film
- a decade later, it's HD video now, how technology & time flies...LOL Just found this late tonight - to funny, not to share:
