| How do I get a prong collar on my dog? She is already buck wild when I attempt to put the Martindale on her. Is there a way to introduce a pinch collar or will this turn into a two person operation. With our girl, I think it will. Any advice?

| When putting a prong collar on, do not slide it over the dog's head. You need to unclip it, place it around the neck, and reclip it.
I'm sorry, I don't have a lot of suggestions for getting the dog to settle for having a collar put on, I've never had that problem. What is your girl's history? Is she new to you? |

| I used treats to get her used to it. I'd start with a few commands; Come, treat, Sit, treat, petting, good girl, treat, let her sniff the collar, good girl, treat, then in a so smooth move place it around her neck, treat, snap it closed (If you have the Sprenger one, one side says, OPEN, and then snap it in place, treat, mega praise, Oh, boy, play, play, play, Repeat as necessary.....Good Luck!!

| Depends...is it excitement because she knows it's walk time? Or freaking out because she just dislikes the collar?
Zeus sits when I bring out the prong as he knows it's walk time. He is uber excited and wiggling and wagging his nub while he sits patiently for me to put his prong on.
He understands that no sit = no walk. |

| | Alpha | Personally, I would train the dog to be calm (regardless of collar) or no fun times can happen, etc.

| Sit is a wonderful command teach sit no more problems on putting the collar on.Just teach the sit with a piece of wonderful food something she usually does not get. Also you can take the collar out to put it on if she is wild put the collar down wait a few seconds try again you may have to do in about a couple of hundred times before the little light bulb comes on.Always have a back up collar on with a pinch I use a light weight nylon choke chain type collar sometimes a pinch will fall off the dog usually at the worst time.Good Luck |

| This is a rescue that the op took in with issues, including fear issues, before they got her. I think she is an aussie. Fear in 15 month old dog
This quick release prong might work. One of my fellow club members has one, his wife has arthritis in her hands and this works for her. PRONG DOG COLLAR - HERM SPRENGER - DogEquipment.com

The most important factor, however, is getting if fitted properly, by adding or removing links. It should fit up around the upper portion of the neck. My trainer helped me with that.

I might have to get one of these. | You're welcome! I also have the one without the live ring in 2 different sizes, the only thing they've been good for is spare links. If you get the new one let me know if it's any good. |

| When I put Lou's collar on I put him in a down, stay.
I'm doing the same for my foster (she's buck wild too) lol.

| Thank you all (and especially Robinb) for your input. I will order the Sprenger with the easy clip. It will make it so much easier for me as I already have bad wrists and an injured shoulder from past injury, hence why I need Penny to stop pulling. May I ask what is the difference between the correction given by a live ring? I've never used a prong collar before and don't want to be too aggressive in the corrections.
Penny seems to get excited as she knows when I/we pull the collar and leash out she is going for a drive or a walk. She is a jumper so I wait for her to sit before putting the martindale on. She is fearful and at times nips if she is over the top excited. A work in progress

| I've never used one of the prongs with the easy on and off snap or buckle. My TD did mention one day that unless there is a good reason, which there is in your case, that he likes the regular prong collars better as the correction comes a little faster. But he also was saying this for dogs working in a precise level of competition obedience. For just regular walking I sort of let mine just self correct on the prong collars, and they seem to figure that out fast. If a dog is just being a pulling idiot when walking, just turn around fast and head off in the other direction. Remember to reward when they are doing things right!!!
Also when I get any collar out for my dogs they turn into bouncing idiots, both trying to get their heads in the same collar, as they know we are off to do something fun. I don't want to damper the enthusiam so I just live with it.

Now, there's some wise advice!!

| I would just like to add that the prong collar has to be one of the best pieces of training equipment ever invented! (Although my wife seems to think it is some sort of mid evil torture device).
My 5 month old already walked really good on a lead with a flat collar but liked to pull ahead just a bit. I bought one of the Sprengers (you just pinch one of the links together to remove. Order the small and a couple extra links).
After putting on the prong I have never had to correct him. Just the sensation of it on his neck is enough for him to behave perfectly.
It is also a good idea to use a back-up collar (I use the dominant dog collar from Leerburg) as a back-up. Prongs can come apart with a hard enough correction, not that i've needed to do that but just as a safety.
