My dobie recently started hiking his leg to pee. I'm such a proud papa. 1 problem though... He doesn't pee in the house, but when I let him out in the back yard, he pees on everything on our porch(patio furniture, potted plants, bbq pig, etc...). Is it possible to train him NOT to do that and to go out in the grass?
Fence off your porch Go out with him on a leash and guide him out to the grass (especially bushes, trees, etc. on the “edges” of your property), or stand there and protect your porch when he is out.
Treat your porch as you did when you were potty training him not to go in the house--stop him from peeing on the porch just as you did in the house. Leash him, lead him to the correct spots, and praise him for going there. You *might* be able to teach him to respect your porch as he treats the rest of your house proper--hence no peeing there.
Also use some kind of enzyme treatment on what you can on the porch chairs, etc. to remove as much prior marking scent that he’s left there already.
The porch is fenced off, but he goes absolutely bananas if I lock him out of the porch. He already hates being outside alone, but it's magnified 10X if I lock the gate on the porch.
No it is not a male thing you can train them not to mark it is not a house breaking issue it is a male dog issue. I have had 4 male dogs over the years all were taught not to mark example: Young male Bouvier was getting ready to hike his leg on my dinging room chair, I just happened to come around the corner with a towel in my hand. I popped him on the butt with the towel took him by the collar and escorted him out the back door telling him off all the way, he never did it again. You just have to make them think GOD is going to come down and strike them dead if they ever do it again. Of course you are not really going to hurt them just make them think you are.
I wish unless I supervise every potty break he pees where e wants. On the picnic table, on the grill, on the chicken coop, on the gutter spout... such is life lol.
The other weekend I set a bag of bird seed down in the yard and turned my back for one minute and he had already walked over and pissed on it lesson learned lol.
I can't tell you how many times Mav has peed on Gretchen and I feel like it's her fault. I'll be walking them and he will sniff something and then go to pee and she tries to walk under his leg like an idiot! She so smart but in this instance she's a box of rocks. She does it ALL time at least once a walk and then is shocked when she's peed on!
My boy is almost 5 years old and he still hasn't learned to lift his leg to pee. My boyfriend is convinced it's because he only had a female dog to learn from and he just figures that's how he's supposed to pee too. But I have noticed he tends to pee on my deck when the weather is bad, or if the yard is too muddy. I guess he doesn't like getting his feet dirty. I have to go out there with him, send him off the deck and basically block the doorway so he can't get back onto the deck until he does his business. He glares at me the entire time, but at least he pees in the yard now. He's not happy about it...
My friend bought a real nice 1985 Olds Cutlass, a dealership demo with low mileage.
- had original style Rally II rims, in factory chrome
- Rusty there GSD was let out the kitchen door, to the garage with full back yard access
Potty #1 was always happen in the garage / on the newer car with the expensive wheel option
- unbeknownst to the home owners, still inside the house
Soon the rusting chrome was spotted, and Rusty's lazy potty break habits was finally identified...LOL...$$
ha ha ..my boy Anzio at 6.5 months just started lifting his league. Proud pappa.. he hit a potted plant once in my hallway with a quick whiz.. I have not had a problem since. I do not plan to neuter him.
I'm with dobebug - yes, you CAN teach them not to mark on certain items, but it takes absolute consistency and diligence. Richter remained intact until roughly age two (and certainly was hiking his leg - started probably at about age 5 months). He doesn't pee on any of our chairs, our grill, etc. When we're out on walks, he's not permitted to mark on anything humans touch...I find that rude and gross. I just don't allow it, and so he doesn't even try. It's the same as marking in the house - you can absolutely teach them where it is and is not appropriate to pee. But you MUST be consistent and you have to teach them.
I found this searching for excitement peeing issues, but now I wonder if Apollo is marking? He'll be 5 months soon, he's potty trained, goes in the grass or on command, but he also gets excited and will pee for 2 seconds wherever he is, standing on the tile, on a chair or couch, on a low table he likes to hop on (outside). He rarely has accidents but he does those little puddles at least once a day, usually when he's really excited, also if I don't walk him to the grass he'll poop all over the concrete, but doesn't have a pooping inside issue.
So is this something he'll grow out of as he gets bigger or something I need to train to fix?
This isn't marking...it's most likely excited peeing, as you suspect. You could take him in to have him screened to make sure there isn't a medical thing like a UTI, but I suspect it's more of an overexcited thing. Also, know that a lot of pups (boys, especially, I think) need to pee multiple times to really be "empty". I like to give pups the opportunity to pee more than once when we go out for potty breaks rather than bringing them back in right after they pee the first time.
If he's peeing a little when he's excited, try to identify when those times are and use management. If he pees when you first get home because he's excited, quickly get him outside (and, make coming home VERY low key...ignore him, don't get really happy to see him, etc.).
I'd nip it in the bud now. My boy didn't learn to lift his leg til almost a year, my other dog is a girl. I think he picked it up shortly after we moved as I believe he watched the neighbors little dog happily trotting around peeing on things indiscriminately. He tentatively decided to try it in the house. The first time I didn't see him do it but found a spot in the dining room floor, I cleaned it with bleach to eradicate any of his scent. Then the next time he really tried me and did it right in front of me, I couldn't believe the audacity! :2surprise: However I'm glad I caught him this early because after a swat, a yell, and an immediate escort outside he has not done it again.
With excited/submissive peeing, they are literally so worked up that they can't hold their urine, and it can happen while they are standing, sitting, or lying down. Marking a a deliberate action, generally preceded by sniffing an object and then sidling up to it to pee on.
You treat excited/submissive peeing and marking very differently. The former requires that you keep calm yourself, and just clean the area thoroughly. Most dogs usually outgrow it as they mature. If it's the later, then treating them like a competely untrained puppy might be the answer, so that you can quickly give a "No", and hustle them outside to an acceptable place.
Buddy will be 11 years old 4/28/2017 has never hiked his leg still pees like a girl does not bother me in the least.
