Hey Friends!

As some of y'all know I am in the process of choosing a breeder and waiting on a puppy. In the meantime, I'd like y'alls advice on good training books. (This isn't my first puppy, so I know a bit about crates, come, sit, clickers, etc) But I would like to read about obedience and 'attention work.'

What are the best books or articles y'all have read?

Best,
Meredith

Hi Meredith, Overall I've gotten the most value out of videos. The Michael Ellis videos on Leerburg are excellent. A great place to start would be "The power of training dogs with food" and "the power of playing tug with your dog". Michael talks allot about engagement.

I think Dick Staal's book is very good. Mostly he talks about shaping and backchaining, so it's quite different than what Michael Ellis will teach.

If you want to view videos, the best place by far is Bow Wow Flix, BowWowFlix.com: Dog DVD Rentals | Dog Training Dvd | Dog Dvds | Rent Dog Videos. It is more economical than Leerburg. They have a vast library.

As for Obedience books, we always recommend SCHUTZHUND OBEDIENCE - TRAINING IN DRIVE, By Sheila Booth and Gottfried Dildei, as an excellent resource. Also for just regular pet training and socialization, The Other End of The Leash by Patricia McConnell, Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson, and Good Owners, Great Dogs by Brian Kilcommons.
