Recommended amount of time daily for training?

What is the recommended amount of time daily for training a 4 month old pup? This would include the sit, stay etc..

Also, I already got him trained to sit and somewhat stay. He sits on command and hand signal but still working on "stay". Should I continue with "sit" training still since he already sits just to make sure he always remembers?

I think you should always practice old commands just to solidify them. You probably don't need to spend a whole lot of time on "sit" but it's good to use it often. You don't always have to make training a food reward session. As your puppy gets old enough to "ask" to go outside, you can use a command and the reward is going outside. You can do the same thing with meals and other things the dogs wants. That way, you're training throughout the day.

I think the amount of time you spend training depends on the attention span of both your dog and you. Try to end the session right before the dog loses interest and before you start to get frustrated. This will vary with different dogs but as the dog gets older, you can train for longer amounts of time.

I've had really good success doing several short training sessions each day. Before work, I'll do a quick, ten minute session. Right when I get home, I'll do another ten minutes and after dinner I'll do a slightly longer session.

Any interactions you have with your dog will be a potential training time so think less about amounts of time and more about progress.

My pup is only 15wks old but Ive been training him in short bursts (5-10mins) several times a day ever since I got him. Once he has the basics downpat at home I take him to the park/beach or anywhere there are distractions and do another training session. I keep it short, keep it fun.

Basically take EVERY opportunity to reinforce the basics. I reward new commands with a food treat, everything is rewarded by making a fuss of my pup.

Was told a good rule of thumb for 'formal walks' to teach heel etc was 5min per month. (ie 4mth = 20mins)
