You CAN teach a show dog how to HEEL and how to SIT!! they also can learn STAND and TROT. That is exactly what Wyatt is learning right now! He knows stand and he pops right up! I'm hoping to turn that pop up into a self stack...working with his confirmation handlers. He has two trainers... one for conformation and one for obedience... Both trainers do both... but the obedience trainer is closer... and they both agree that dogs can be dual trained... teaching heel will really help this. I know what you mean because Wyatt tugs on his leash really bad and gets in front of me too....

I would say try the 180 degree turn every time he starts to lead in toward you. He will have to adjust himself by going the other way. Try it once turning with him on the outside and once with him on the inside and see if one works better than the other. Also, by doing this he won't be rewarded for going where he wants to.

You could also try just stopping until he moves a bit away from you, then continue.

It takes more than a couple of tries (usually several) with either technique for the dog to "get it".

Forget it... ban them all. Misinformation rules.

I'm done here. I guess I just not smart enough about the genetic code to play here.

I also wanted to note that my parents have a weim that was first obedience trained and THEN trained for the ring. There were no problems with the training. Different collars do help both you and the dog.

Thanks musicdobe. As you and others have said, the collar idea seems a good one. We didn't go on a walk today because it was raining pretty much all day. But I still had to take him outside and use the leash, so I noticed that he was behaving differently with the flat collar that he wears around the house than with the choke collar. He still pulls with the flat one, going to the end of the leash.

So this is making me think, like I was told by many, that Zack WOULD be able to differenciate between obedience and ring. I see light at the end of the tunnel !
