I spoke with a trainer tonight at a local kennel clube. They also have an agility course and agility training, and he competes in obedience.
He agrees that dog training is not a "one size fits all" thing and said that often larger dogs have different training needs. I am going to try out some private lessons with them, hopefully we can start next week. Wish us luck! Thanks for all the advice
