| CGC... hmmmm.... ok, let me first start of with, I get it.. I really do... I understand the purpose and point behind the Canine Good Citizen program , I DO!! My club actually encourages it, as they want to show more dobermans with this title so that maybe it will get in the powers that be's heads (the lawmakers) that Dobermans are good dogs. Anybody that owns or really knows one of course knows that they are awesome.
But really... For anyone that owns and actually trains their dogs... this test is really rather humorous. Maybe I just have such high standards for my dogs that I dont realize all dogs arent calm and behaved?? Mind you Karma does have her moments when she likes to trap an Italian outside...
Anyways, the point of this banter is that baby girl Karma earned her CGC today. I was glad that she didnt get up to say hello to the approaching stranger, as that was my only worry being the social butterfly that she is but other than that, the test was a piece of cake, I didnt really train or anything for it... it just happened to be available and figure I would try. I think any dog with training would be able to pass... or ... I could be wrong..

| The CGC is wonderful test that was made to be attainable by MOST good dog owners without the need for extensive training and in your case none at all.
Albeit simple, it is just proof that your dog is controlled and is not a danger to society.
Also, it's a good test to see if your dog is ready for the next level in terms of training and a very encouraging title for novice dog owners/handlers. This test is also a prerequisite (along with other guidelines provided by TDI) for Therapy Dog Certification. Congrats to Karma! |

I was so mad! as he did so well on everything else lol! he KNEW how to be good......but acted like a spoiled baby. |

I had to walk her into a room with the person who was going to hold her.. it was the room they were doing the vaccinations (was a pet health fair), and I think if it wasnt for ONE THING!! she would of failed it, I was worried about that because she is a little velcro-ey to me... BUT Luckily there was a crate of kittens they were trying to adopt out... and the person told me that she was completely captivated by the kittens. LOL! She has never seen kittens before... I guess they distracted her at the perfect time

| | True to You | Congrats. Simple as it seems, I have seen a few dogs fail the test. But most importantly, they tried as owners to go out and be proactive with their dogs. Pass or fail. There are too many owners that sit idle by and don't care about their pets behavior.

| zeus and me-
Rather than the old "tie up your dog" section,
they have you give your dog to someone now to hold for 3 minutes, and you go out of sight, instead of the old tie out method. My old red boy passed his CGC (this was years ago)and he hated to be tied even for a minute. I used a metal wrapped tie out cable at home to practice this....at the CGC, we returned after the 3 minutes and he was JUST starting to gnaw in the rope holding him in place there! He passed, whew.
The old test had you bring a brush with you when they brushed your dog; the one I just did with Rexy had the judge brush your dog (and every other dog) with a generic brush! Not too
hygenic!!
Anyway, I do think the CGC is generally easy for a dog with obedience training, but there are parts that some Dobes may not like. Meeting stranger with strange dog (if dog aggressive) and being left with a stranger for 3 minutes. Rexy just leaned into his "holder" for 3 minutes of petting!! |
