| In situations like this, I would prepare to address them before they start to go after them, then trying to address it after they are chasing. Breaking a distraction in progress is much harder to undo than to eliminate the distraction before it happens. So plan for this. In the beginning, I make sure I have lots of good treats readily available and when I see the distraction approaching us, I start working some of our basic commands to get their attention. A sit works nicely and I reward like a vending machine. I keep rewarding the attention, on me, until the distraction moves on by. Remember, the farther the distraction is from you, the easier it is to keep attention. Also, by doing this, the distraction looses its intensity because they are focusing on you. Its not something that will change over night, you have to be persistent with it. Keep their attention and do not let the excitement energy build to a point where the chase is too much for them to resist.
