Both of my dogs use it. We tried everything to choke chains to gental leaders. The gental leaders worked a little bit but my girl would still try to rub and get it off that it looked like it was starting to rub some hair off her nose. You just want to make sure that the prong collar will pull tight around the neck when they pull but will fall down on the neck when relaxed. You dont want it to be sooo tight around their neck that it is tight even when they are not pulling!

I use the prong as well. I think they are much safer than a slip/choke collar by providing even instead of one sided pressure. To have it work correctly, it is meant to fit tight, not loose.

If worn and used correctly, the prong is an excellent training tool. Someone on an earlier thread posted a link to how it should fit and when/how it should be used. I believe that it's not a collar you just go out and use. You should have a professional show you how and when to use it. If used incorrectly it will do more harm than good.

Here is a good thread about prongs: I need to know: does your dobe pull on leash even with a prong collar?

Also, search for "prong" in the search function and there are a lot of other threads on the subject.

The only prob you will have in the UK is you cant buy them LOL,

the best place is to find someone on ebay usa who will ship to the uk.
but then you have to fit it yourself !!!

i have wanted to use a prong but i do think the narrow minded people in the uk would have a complete mental fit if they saw a dobe in a prong in the uk..

they are accepted in the usa and other areas, but im not so sure about here !!!

We were having a terrible time in obedience until the instructor recommened the prong. It was the saving of both of us!

I'm going to echo everyone else's sentiments. The prong collar is generally the best way to teach obedience to a dog. That is not my opinion, that is a scientifically studied and proven fact. The top obedience trainers in the world (i.e. Fritz Biehler) use a prong collar as their primary tool.

It is important to remember however, that the prong collar is just that...a tool. It is not a "magical device" and is only as effective as the person controlling it. As others have already said, if you are unfamiliar with how to use it, seek the advice of someone who does. Again, it is only a tool, and just like a hammer in the hands of the right person can build a house, or a wrench in the right hands can fix the engine of your car, those same tools in the hands of my four year old little girl are going to be ineffective at best, and destructive at worst.
