| In the past i have done it by rewarding them every time the bark. Eventually they will start doing it on command. |

| I had a foster dog for awhile and I taught him how to speak on command for a treat or especially for a bully stick! This was actually a little bit tough, because I think he had been taught to NOT bark in the house. So inducing him to bark, even for a treat took a lot of repetitive encouragement. But here's what I did:
First figure out in play what makes your dog bark. With Harv, I learned that if I pointed at him and sort of "air-jabbed" at him with my finger, I could get him to bark and play bow.
Then, once I knew he would bark, I started to say "SPEAK!" everytime I "air-jabbed" at him with my finger. When he barked he got the treat and lots of praise.
Eventually I could get him to sit, and bark when I said "SPEAK!" before giving him his bully stick (his very favorite). It took some practice and lots of encouragement that barking was what I wanted him to do, but we got there.
Good luck!

| I taught Q the other day. I just kept looking at him and saying "Tell Me" in a very animated tone of voice. He thought I was playing and stated whineing so when he did I would say "good boy", then it turned into a bark and I immediatly said "Good, Good" and gave him a treat. Now I can just look at him and say, Tell me, and he will bark. Sheer luck really since I was just playing around with him. My problem is getting him to shut up when he is outside, he is scared of everything (so it seems). |

| If he speaks on command, it should be easier for him to figure out "quiet"....so they say! Try the quiet command now that he has the speak down. |

| I'm also trying to teach Buddy to speak. I tried this did not work yet not sure if it will work. Patches knows speak will bark for a treat, had Buddy sit on his bed on the Patio. I had Patches in front of him I would tell Patches speak she would bark and get a treat. I would tell Buddy speak all he did is look at me???
Patches maybe smarter than Buddy not sure of that but was told Doxie's are hard to train??? |

| | Alpha | When Prince was a puppy every time he barked I would say speak. After a few times he would speak on command. |
