Gallery Pics: 0Visit darkstar91769's Gallery ![]() | I taught my guy not to pull with a bag of treats. If we walked and he pulled I froze. Stopped dead in my tracks, becoming a tree. The when slack was in the lead he got lots of praise and a treat. Did this a lot for a month or so...now he just wants to keep the leash slack. Make sure you come up with a "marker" word to use when the leash gets slack...I say "easy" then treat him. Now we walk and he's super good about the lead being slack, but if he starts tugging I just say "easy midnight" and he slows until leash is slack again. I would generally avoid trying to correct the pulling, and instead focus on rewarding the slack leash. I found it much much faster and easier to get a positive response from the treating and rewarding of the slack leash. But I am not a professional trainer and this is just my $.02 I do use a gentle leader easy walk harness for runs and whatnot. When we run he gets real excited and the harness helps with the pulling when I want to slow down. good luck, and don't give up. Progress might be slow but its super rewarding when you can walk along at a slow stroll having your buddy walking nicely too. a slack leash is halfway to a heel ![]() peace, darkstar

You have to realize that if he is pulling the whole way then you can't have gone far, because if he is pulling, you shouldn't be moving. At least not during a loose leash walk training, free roaming is another thing that I always made sure to include while on walks or outings. Another option to try is a counterclockwise circle. With him on the left, if he starts to get in front of you you cut him off by turning left cutting him off track. You will basically start off by walking in a small circle. As you improve with this, your circle will get bigger. Whenever he starts to go forward, in front of you you simply cut him off by turn to the left. This has worked with a couple dogs that I've known that have not done well with more usual loose leash walking training. |

I fed randomly a few treats at a time, then decreased it and let him follow the smell on my hand. Took a little time, but both my guys are pretty good now. I know this probably isn't the best way to train, but it worked for me. These guys are way to strong for me to let them pull.

I did not jerk it, he did, then after that, walked good and got praised. He then knew what he was supposed to do and now with treats or a toy, I can get him to walk next to me. He is not consistant without the prong collar. I have been told that the prong is safer on the neck then a gentle leader or a choke collar. There are however several threads you can search on here, that debate this issue.

Gallery Pics: 7Visit bren's Gallery ![]() ![]() | Lexx was the same until about 6 weeks ago when I finally bit the bullet and put a full choke chain on him (Didn't want to unless I had to). Now it's like walking a different dog, even the missus enjoys walking him again. I'm not saying that he's 100% perfect on the lead but a damn site better than he was. Also I didn't have to choke him with it either all I really did was put it on him and he decided to walk much better - Strange I know - now a quick jerk on the lead is enough to put him back in his place most of the time. Hopefully in a while he'll be walking at heal ALL of the time. Good luck |
