The only thing that also worked for my two were the prong collars... I tried the choke chains but my female especailly would still pull and pull even when I did the stop and act like a tree thing with treats. We would start walking again and she would be back at it in a matter of seconds. I stopped using the choke chain cause she would pull so hard that she would start choking herself and caughing. I was not even pulling back on her I was just keeping my arm in the same position and she didnt care. My male started doing this as well.... AHH!! So we put the prongs on and the first time she tried to pull away from me she did not like the result.... Now we walk with prongs which some would say is bad or good or whatever but it works for us and does not hurt our dogs. You put anything else on them but the prongs and they are a$$es to the 10th degree!!! I tried the gental leaders but my female has bad skin problems and she would still try to pull with that on and it ended up like almost rubbing the top of her nose raw (like taking some hair off etc) so didnt want to do that anymore either!

Storm was the absolute worst when it come to having a lead on her. She would totally spaz out trying to get off of it or pull away. My wife picked up one of these Premier Gentle Leader Training Dog Collar - New Puppy Center - PetSmart and after wearing it a couple few times, with lots of praise, the problem was solved. She will stay right by our sides now without pulling and she actually stops and sits when we stop. It has made a huge difference.

Forgot to mention it earlier but there's a thing over here called the halti which a lot of people swear by. I personally know lots of people who have used them successfully on a variety of dogs including mastiffs and rotts. Basically it's a collar with an extension which goes loosely around the muzzle allowing the lead to be attached to the muzzle end - when the dog tries to walk off in front/pull, his head is turned this stops him from pulling. ive been looking at the prong collar and ive noticed that it has some spikes around the collar part just wondering if the dog pulls do these stick into the dogs neck..........

YES...that is why the dog does NOT pull! It does not take very long for the dog to realize that a nice loose leash is just wonderful.

the halit is basicall the same as a gentle leader, both of these are supposed to be not good for a dobe cos of the long neck ??

i use a choak on zeus and missy and they walk pretty good, i would LOVE to buy a prong to try but you can not get them in england so i would have to send for 2 from the usa , and im sure in the little narrow minded village i live in i would probably be hunted and gunned down for dog cruelty if i put them in a prong ?? LMAO

A good prong collar is one that the prongs have rounded edges. The idea is the prongs pinch the skin around them whem tightened and make it uncomfortable for the dog to pull or continue the undesired behavior. Some would say that prongs are inhumane. if you look at the statistics, you will find there are much more injuries to the trachea (windpipe) with a choke chain than there are with the prong. Another thing is that you are able to make a less severe and quicker correction with a prong collar.
There is another issue related with gentle leader and halti.. When you pull the leash on either of those devices, it does put pressure on the neck and spine. Wobblers can be an issue with Dobies. I would avoid both. if your're worried about what the yahoos say put a prong collar cover on. Hope this helps.
