| | Lil Pup | teaching your dobe to speak I have a three year old male dobe, that I got about two months ago he was returned to his breeder. He will sit, stay, down, shake with both paws, play dead, but he will not bark on command. I've tried hot dogs, cheese, pieces of hamburger patties, and dog treats. He just sits there and looks at me and then he will just walk away. I also tried ringing the doorbell and when he barked I rewarded saying good speak, but that hasn't worked either. Any tips would be great. |

| I was able to teach Zip the speak command but not Desi so I know how you feel. With Zip I just rewarded the slightest sound with a treat and it escalated into a bark. Desi will sit right next to him and see how it works but still won't speak. She'll wind up with a drool that almost reaches the floor instead. LOL |

| Our boy Jack would bark CONSTANTLY. When he was quiet, I would give him a treat. Funny, when I wanted him to bark, if I said the command "bark", he wouldn't make a sound. When I gave the command "speak" he would bark. Go figure. It took me a few days to realize that I would tell him DON'T BARK so therefore, I needed to change the command to speak. Maybe they are smarter than us! |

| *LMAO* I know the feeling. Shelby spoke on command, Cobra no. Blaze does, Ember no. And Sasha -- there was no shuttin' her up!
I think every dog is different and some are just not "speakers."

| I too was frustrated that I could not train Kaiser to bark on command so my trainer so one day with her she blew in his face and he barked... so in the beginning (it took maybe two training sessions) I blew in Kai's face to "make him bark" So I said "speak" blew in his face and he barked.
Then I worked it up to Speak, Whisper and growl. Basically as he did the whisper (a baby like bark very quiet) I made a small woof noise myself and he caught on to what I wanted. Then we do a growl, that is a low sound made with his mouth closed and comes from his throat. Unfortunately it is really quiet so I have to be listening for it when I am trying to show someone else his "tricks". I just make sure I only reward the sounds that I want for the command. For example if I say Whisper and he "speaks" then I say no, and usually he tries again for the reward.

| I love the commercial where the girls with the doggie day care says "use your indoor voice" and the dog does the quiet bark... it is just adorable! |

| Blaze is a volume speaker too. Her loud bark is "Big Speak." Medium bark is just "Speak" and her low is "Whisper." Then we also have "Blah, Blah, Blah" which is were she just kinda babbles...it's pretty funny!

| Try howling in the car to get started. If I really get into it, Wonder will mumble and then join in!
