| Won't stay out ,Scratching the door(HELP) Okay I have let my guys run me to death with the in and out, in and out when ever they want to go out and now my male goes out comes in 15 seconds later than wants to go back out in 5 minutes so on and so on. My female is doing the same thing just with less regularity. How do I break this habit.....problem i am worried about is that my female ususlly whines when she really has to go out, but I am certain is has become a game and she has me trained on this issue. Keep in mind I have a mostly glass paned back door so the dogs can see i am sitting right on the couch just not letting him in. I had been spraying him with water, but i don't want him to think going outside is punishment or staying is side is either. Thanks for your help?

| Have you done any verbal correction when they whine?
Also, a Soda can filled with a few coins can help. Open the door, shake the can whenever you hear the whining, and say no. They should respond by being silent (you've only got a few seconds so reward them quickly), reward them with 'Goood quiet'. Then close the door. It will be pretty annoying, but eventually they get the idea.
They have to know who is boss, deciding when they go in and out should be up to you. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
Whatever your method, be consistent and stay positive! Good Luck! |

| My boy had the same problem with the scratching and whining. To break this you need to stand by the door with the knob turned waiting for him to scratch, as soon as he scratches you need to fling open the door and either squirt him with a bottle, or push him back with your foot while saying NO firmly. It's all about timing. You want him to think that the second he touches that door its going to come flying open with a nasty surprise. A few of those and I can guarantee he will stop. Most of my foster rescues have zero training and all scratched at the door, some violently. I broke all of them with this method after 3 or 4 times. On the other side of the spectrum, when they are outside, always be on the look out for them sitting nicely at the door, when you see that, then give a treat, because that's what you want. |

| My girl wants to go out every 10 minutes also, gets worse when the weather is nice. Sometimes she just stands there looking at the door or window waiting for us to come out. |

| | Lil Pup | My guy Captain was having this issue... we want the dogs out in the (fenced) back yard long enough to do their business after they eat. Our older dogs are fine with this, but Cappy just loves to be inside with the people. The whining and barking got to be so bad, then it escallated to a kind of caterwauling I have never heard come from a dog. We began to fear that the neighbors would call the cops to report a Satanic cult torturing and dismembering a dog!
After the 3rd time the other day of scolding him, leaving the room, sitting down only to have the ruckus start up again, I went to the door, opened it, dumped a tumbler full of water on him, and promptly shut the door - no eye contact, no verbal intercourse. After a couple of minutes of quiet, he started up again - I repeated the process. After that, blessed silence. After about 15 minutes of quiet I went and welcomed him indoors and dried him off with a towel. He's a quick study and hasn't had too many more "wet lessons". We set a kitchen timer and we are gradually increasing the amount of time we require him to be out (and quiet) and he is getting it! We are trying to set him up to succeed and be rewarded with a warm welcome indoors when he does good (which is often now).
Our neighbors are grateful. |

| I tell Quentin to wait. If I just let him in and I know he does not need to go back back out, I tell him to wait. If I just lelt him out, I do the same thing, I do the hand signal for wait through the window then when I do let him in, I won't do it till he sits for a minute. |
