Good on your hubby and parents, for helping like that! Just take it easy, and know that healing takes time. Glad for the update!

Just seeing this now, I don't come on DT much anymore. Sending you good vibes to get through the healing. You have this thing beat, I just know it. We also went though the BIG C here this past year, so I totally know what you are going through, it changes everything. Hugs from me and Monty.

It was such a rough year emotionally that I needed to step back from the forum, I'm still not feeling like me, hoping to find my way back to myself again soon. Hope your healing continues and you are soon good as new!

Hey everyone. Just an update. I finally got my drain tubes out yesterday and was able to take a shower this morning. Boy was it nice! I have a follow up with my surgeon and my plastic surgeon next week. I feel pretty good since I got the drains out. I'm not near as sore as I had been. I have an appointment with an Oncologist and a medical Radiologist on March 6th to go over a treatment plan. Please be in prayer for us as we prepare for the next step. Thanks! Hope everyone has a great weekend!

So glad all went well and you are doing better! Feel free to PM me about radiation and chemo if you want; I have started learning some ways to ease side effects and pace my energy. Good luck!!!

are you going to have some physical therapy to help with exercises for range of motion? or are you able to move freely? surgical techniques are so much more sophisticated and delicate than they used to be. hugs (but gently!) lois

I had mine done in 04. Just recently I went to PT for shoulder pain that we thought was from the betes. Luckily a PT from Travel was there and identified that it was from my shoulders rolled forward. Because of my bilateral mastectomy, the muscle was shortened because I didn't have PT to stretch it after the surgery so they just naturally contracted.

Apparently it is so important now to have PT after a mastectomy that they are calling patients from up to five years ago to have PT.

So great suggestion!! A must do!

Well guys I'm not feeling well. I had to go to the ER late Sunday night. I started feeling a little bad late Saturday and started having bad diarrhea and fever on Sunday. They did a stool sample and I tested positive for C. Diff. That's the short name for it. It's an intestinal infection colitis thing caused by antibiotics. It is not airborne but it is contagious so we have to be really careful. They put me on Flagyl. I have an appointment with a gastroenterologist on Thursday afternoon. I'm so frustrated because I was doing so well until this started. I'm such a worry wort too. Please pray for me. I've been in tears off and on since Sunday. Thanks.

C-Diff sucks!! My Mother had it. Go to the infant section of Target and get "Butt Paste".
Don't forget to get probiotics. Flagyl is also metronidazole which is what we give our dogs for diarrhea.

Gatorade, powerade, pedialyte for dehydration.

Try not to have to take vancomycin if you can help it! Ohh and the BRAT diet, but I'm sure you know that already!

Thoughts are with you!

Sorry to hear it, dobebug. C.Diff is no fun. Prayers sent up that you recover quickly and start feeling better right away.

I'm sorry to hear about the C. diff - I know that has been more common lately. Hopefully the flagyl clears it up and you are feeling better soon! Big gentle hugs to you for strength.

Urgent prayers needed

My husband had c.diff and was in the hospital for our first Thanksgiving and Christmas as a married couple. It was so scary and I've never seen him in that much pain before. Please eat yogurt and take that medicine. I'll be praying for you.

Hi there - so sorry for your suffering. C diff is NOT colitis in the familiar sense of the term - it is short for Clostridium Difficile, and it is one of the many normal bacteria in our digestive system, but which can 'overwhelm' the digestive tract and cause problems when the helpful flora and fauna of the gut are destroyed or compromised by antibiotics, chemo, a weakened immune system, etc. It's contagious when people don't wash their hands properly... which is a bad combination for ill or elderly or weak folks in hospitals or nursing homes.

The initial flare-up is treated with antibiotics, but in order to keep it from being an issue, or having it cause ongoing inflammation in your system, you need to very judiciously and 'religiously' supplement your diet with the healthful cultures. Eating a VERY high quality yogurt or kefir, with multiple live/active organisms (not just lactobacillus acidophilus, but also bifidus, l. bulgaris, l. casei...) is excellent (daily!), but since you are in an ongoing fight with your body, I'd suggest that you also go to a health food store and get a good pre-biotic/pro-biotic supplement with as many organisms in it as you can find. I have a couple with about a dozen strains in them.

Most of the time, when you are healthy, they can maintain a reasonable population without too much help (although "modern, civilized" people tend to have far too few of them in their GI tracts); however, when your immune system and/or GI tract are stressed for any reason, whether illness, medication, bad diet, trauma, whatever,...the body really 'appreciates' the replacement. And really, everyone in the 21st century, with pollution and all, should be eating yogurt at least a couple of times a week anyway. (no - frozen yogurt doesn't count - even if made with live, active cultures, heat and cold kill them, and then they are useless!)

Don't let this stress you or freak you out - it'll resolve, and now you know to be sure to treat your gut proactively, to keep it strong and healthy. (this is something EVERY doctor should tell EVERY patient they ever put on antibiotics - but this is still something that few doctors know or pay attention to - and probably is not well emphasized in medical schools! Feel better fast!

Wow, thanks so much for the detailed info. The ER doc said that probiotics won't help with C.Diff but I've been drinking something made by Dannon that has more live cultures than yogurt. Do you mind telling me what you use? I am gonna discuss all this with the gastroenterologist tomorrow, but I'd really appreciate it if you tell me which ones you use.

so sorry you are going through this

I think the point to probiotics is that once the C.Diff is brought under control, you have to replenish your gut with good bugs so the CDiff doesn't try and dominate again. Probiotics alone will not bring the CDiff under control.
