When my daughter was born, we were in a pretty nice birthing suite, and had been encouraged to bring along videos to watch during labor. Well, I brought tapes of Westminster.

Once we got to the point where things were getting "exciting" and I was getting pretty "stressed", the doctor would occasionally glance over his shoulder, and ask "What kind of dog is that?". I'd be distracted enough to look at the TV, and say "Oh, that's a so-and-so. They were originally bred in X country to do Y job." The doctor said it was one of the most informative births (on non-human matters, anyway) he'd ever attended.

I was going to call my son Kieran which i believe is irish but opted for a welsh name instead when I saw him. For some reason it just seemed more fitting.

I think I jinxed myself with this comment. For the last 2 phone calls my mother has been half-jokingly but not really complaining about my daughter's name. She likes her middle name more and wants me to switch the two. Got her to shush when I told her the 2 other potential first names because she hated them. I told her to be glad that we didn't go with them then.

Congrats you look great! So you are due in May? Months 7-9 were in the summer for me and I was miserable, I will hopefully not have it that way again! I became a first time mom 17 months ago and it's the hardest but most rewarding job ever!

I was in labor 10 hours and after 6hours couldn't take the pain anymore and got the epidural which hurts! I planned all natural but I gave in lol so if you can stick out do it! It sounds like you are realistic which is good, I have had so many friends so upset bc they ended up needing intervention (like pitocin or csection) and I believe they ruined their own expriences dwelling on dissapointment.

I like Liam also but it is becoming popular. I have a friend who wanted an irish name and picked Lochlan, Dillon/Dylan is nice.

Yep, due May 28th, so theoretically could go anytime between 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after. So it'll be before its too hot here, which is good! Though its not like it gets really hot here in Michigan anyway lol

I think I would be disappointed if I couldn't follow through completely, but I wouldn't dwell on it. Things happen, I know that from being in the medical field myself. You can't plan for everything. Its just a goal to shoot for, that's all

Pish, you were lucky, from start to finish with my first I was 18 hours.

With my second, lets just say I went for and broke the hospital record.

I didnt have any drugs for either of my children, but I did have gas and air. So I guess I can't join the 'natural birth club,' oh well, I ain't going through it all again just so I can. LOL!

It is basically 50% Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) and 50% air (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide etc)

Gas and air (Entonox) Gas and air won't remove all the pain but it can help to reduce it and make it more bearable. Many women like it because it's easy to use and they control it themselves.

When my DIL was in labour she found getting her breathing right really hard, (it didnt help there was a wailer next door) in the end I asked if the nurse could get her some gas and air. It both helped with the pain but also because you have to slow your breathing down and take proper breaths not pants it also help to calm her down.

Congrats, you are still tiny!!! I'm 5'10 too, and as soon as I got past morning sickness and month 4, I ballooned out and looked huge.

Don't worry about how much weight you gain. Just eat healthy in good amounts, listen to you Dr./midwife and you'll be fine.

My 2 nephews are Liam and Keegan, so I'm partial to those names. But I like Colin, Declan, Corbin, Conner, and Brody.

Thanks! I went for my 20 week appointment yesterday and I've put on another 5 lbs from last month, so that's 20 lbs total so far... though it honestly doesn't look like 20 lbs when you look at me. I need to start cutting back though =(

Don't "cheat" the baby just because of some number on a scale - eat very well, very halthy, stay away from refined carbohydrates, and take your vitamins... don't know if you plan to nurse, but generally, nursing will help your body return to normal weight, because what you eat has to be shared by you and the new parasite... eat well!!! (PS - are there allergies in your family? I ask because I had none, but Josh was colicky the first couple of months, until someone mentioned that maybe there were milk allergies in one of our families... I stopped drinking milk, and his colic resolved. He had no milk products until he was a year old - then we tried some, and he was fine with them!)

I definitely take my vitamins, and try not to overdo it on the food. I've basically been eating the same, though probably more often. I can't believe I've gained so much!

I do plan on breast feeding, and I hear that burns a lot of calories. Not sure how it's supposed to work after I go back to work after 8 weeks though? How do you keep up with it when you're back at work full time?

You'll need to start a stash of milk while your home for the first 8 wks and then pump once you return to work. If you can pump every four hours at work you should be comfortable and able to maintain your supply. I think, companies with more then 50 employees are required to provide a place to pump. Breastfeeding is really rewarding in my view. And a really special bond between Mom and Baby! I highly recommend the website Kellysmom.com

Or, if you're like me, and develop mastitis, a whole heck of a lot of pain for mom. I had it with both kids, so they both wound up switching to formula pretty quickly.

Yep, employers should provide you with somewhere to pump, and hopefully additional break time. My work provides two additional 20 minute breaks during the day (in addition to two 15 minute breaks)- for employees that are non-exempt (hourly) anyways.

Not quite enough time to read all the responses, but another CONGRATS from me.

For names, I'll go with ones I like of friends who have kids.

I have a Scottish friend - her kids' names are Oscar and Rowan. They're both adorable so I'm biased there.

Another friend's son's name is Liam, which I agree I like but you do see it more frequently.

Yet another's is Finlay - Fin for short. They went through a ton of Irish names before deciding on that one, and I do like it.

We don't have anywhere near 50 employees so I don't even get the guaranteed 12 weeks leave (not that I could afford it anyway). We don't get set breaks either.. Hopefully they'll still be ok with breaks to pump though.

So it's still considered breast feeding if they are drinking breast milk from a bottle?

Technically, yes, they are still "breastfed" if all they get is breast milk.

Sign up for a breastfeeding class thru your hospital. It's a wealth of knowledge. If you pump only and don't nurse it's called exclusively pumping. I pump enough to save for when I start making baby food. Then pump for bottles when we are out and my Husband feeds each morning while I sleep. Some babies have a adjustment to bottles but we've had no issues. She's happy with whatever as long as it means food!

I want to breast feed, but I will have to go back to work full time after 8 weeks. I still want to breast feed after that, and would still like to when I'm home. I guess I'll just have to pump at work for bottles when I'm not there, I suppose.

My sister in law told me that the hospital can write you a prescription for a breast pump and you can get it thru a medical supply store, and your insurance will pay for it. Has anyone else done this? Sounds like a good way to save a couple hundred bucks.

That makes me so sad that you only get 8 weeks off with your baby. They just start developing little personalities and you have to leave them.

In Canada, we get a full year, which is awesome, and fathers can take a parental leave as well.
