Upsetting text spam- anyone else?

So I've always been really careful about my information (this is especially about my phone number) and for the most part I've been satisfied, and felt like I do a pretty good job about not getting creepy phone calls, texts, emails, other things like that.

Now, twice today I've gotten this really irritating text

hey Abby ! This is Jenny. Plz add my y@h00 so we can chat a bit, its: "sntowlekassandra"

and

how's it going Abby ! This is Jenny. Plz add Y!M so we can chat a bit, its: wallace1katarina

Always from different numbers, so the problem isn't blockable.

Since I don't GET spam, there was a reasonable amount of stress following the first text where I had to figure out what was going on, who the hell Jenny was, and whether I could do anything about it. Once I decided it had to be spam I asked my sister about it.

Long story short, she and at least one of her coworkers had exactly the same text messages.

I'd really like to know if anyone else is dealing with this, right now we're suspicious that it would be something with FB (we once got instant text updates- so the website had our number at one time, not a decision I'm happy about,) Verizon Wireless(one of the few places that would have our name and number,) or our bank, which the three of us have in common (my sister and her coworker being employees so its not that big of a coincidence.)

If anyone else has gotten these text messages, I'd love to hear about it, since I really can't find any information on the source so far. These texts are pretty upsetting as a privacy issue (and since they have been coming at all hours of the night) so I want some answers.

blame your service provider first and foremost.

I wouldn't really worry about it. Those spams are usually nationwide, going to any working number.
When I first got my new number I had a few and then they stopped. Are you on the nationwide do not call list?

I just got my phone last night w/a new ph# and got a spam msg about Best Buy credits. They are testing to see if it's a valid # they can use it. Just delete and ignore...

I think the bothersome part is the use of my name. I know there are simple codes online where, a viewer would see it with, say, their screen name for the website. People think they're pretty amusing and they work great for trolling (you know, a thread titled "longtime user posting obscene images! look inside for details" when opened each member would see their own username being blamed for the offence) I don't know what this is called, but I'm not aware of such a code being usable in text messages.

What I'm getting at is that I believe they have my name and number, I'm concerned about where they got the information.

I see.
A while back, if you installed the facebook app on your phone, it would link all your contacts that were saved on your phone, and then anyone could see all your friends phone numbers on facebook. I remember having to go in and delete them all. Maybe that is what happened? I have no idea how you would access it now though.

Do you have your # on facebook? It sounds like someone on your friends list got phished and the spammers are sending to everyone on their contact lists. I would suspect facebook over Verizon or the bank just simply because of the nature of the text.

I always get the "we'll buy your junk car!" texts... I drive a 2012 Lexus so I'm always slightly offended :-/

I've gotten these too. I'm pretty sure its from linking my facebook/skype to my cell number. Which I have since un-linked. But now the info is out there.
Mine always start with "Hey Melissa, how are you?"
Tough to ignore... and then they ask me to add "a-slutty-username"@Y! messenger. At which point Delete and Ignore.

Wow Abby, I got the same message as you. I got one on Christmas day that said: Hey Janet! This is Jenny. Plz add my yah00 so we can chat a bit, its " favoraddison" The phone number associated with the text was (773) 609-6335. I did a reverse lookup on the number and all I got was that it was in Chicago. My phone provider is Sprint, so it appears it is not related to our phone carriers since you said you had Verizon. I only received the one message.

I got several messages similar to that a few months ago and they charged my phone bill 70 dollars. I called the service provider and they took it off saying someone used my number for signing up online for items. Very annoying.

My coworker got a similar sort of text (also at a bizarre-o early morning hour), though it didn't say her proper name. She wouldn't listen to me when I told her it was probably spam
